Disaster in the crock!!! Fermented pickle debacle :-(

Last year I thought I would try my hand at fermented pickles.  The "real deal" as my book put it.  It was a disaster.  I have never made anything so disgusting!

Every other day I skimmed the "scum" that looked a lot like maggots.  It smelled pretty good, but after 3 weeks of hard work--hit

Anyone out there ever been successful?  I really want to try it.

If it isn't loving, don't do it!

Fermentation is supposed to be so good for you, and so easy... I am afraid I haven't even successfully made sauerkraut.  Many of the folks on SSelf seem to make it sound easy- maybe you can get some advice over there?  I would love to learn how to do it.  Keep us posted!
