Corn Thread for 2014

I grew Daymon Morgan's Kentucky Butcher corn last year, first time I had grown corn in years. It made cornmeal for some delicious cornbread. This year, I am growing several varieties. So I thought I would keep up with them here. Ya'll are welcome to tell about your corn plantings here also. We can compare notes, varieties, growing and most of all EATING corn!

I was given Peaches N' Cream seed, so I planted it. It is up about 6" now and growing nicely. My grand daughter and I planted Painted Mountain corn yesterday. I laid out the bed in a grid to maximize my space, punched a planting hole with a hoe handle and she dropped in the seed. She can't wait to eat it. I am also going to plant Anasazi corn in a couple of weeks, if not sooner.

What corn are you planting?

Silver queen. I hope it tastes as good as I've heard

I'm planting Yukon Chief, a short season sweet corn developed for Alaskan gardeners. I'm going to fake it out by placing a few cardboard cutouts of sled dogs around and yelling "MUSH" at it whenever I go by.

Painted Mountain is going in again of course, and I'm using Marshalls Japonica striped corn in containers.

'Delectable' bicolor sweet corn, same as last year. It was so good!

@thistlebloom are you going to eat the Japonica corn or is it just for ornamental purposes? It is so pretty, it would look good in my front yard garden, but it would have to wind up being supper at some point!

Do you eat the Painted Mountain as fresh corn or just for cornbread?

I have only used PM as a flour corn Bay. This is the first time growing the Japonica, so I don't know. I think it's a flint corn...so, maybe I'll just appreciate it for it's beauty.

I'll grow Breeder's Choice from Burpee. I tried a few different ones and all did OK, but I've settled on just one hybrid and this is it. I'll plant maybe 20 feet of four rows four times, spaced 1-1/2 to 2 week apart. That way I have fresh corn to eat for over two months, some to give away, and still enough to make a real good canning all four times.

We have been lucky so many of the modern sweet corn varieties are so quick to maturity. I have a neighbor who would like to grow Kandy Korn and has tried for years. I think he is just about done with that 89 day corn.

A week or so less than those long-season varieties, we can enjoy them all. With a 70 day variety by itself or in a mix of plantings, we can have a long season of fresh sweet corn. The SE types are often good at sprouting in cold soil and I have stayed with them for years.

This will be the first time to grow a "synergistic" variety, Serendipity. At 82 days, it looks like it can follow the standard Ambosia and the Sugar Buns we have had the last few years.

I hope someone will tell me if we will get in trouble having it not too far from these SE varieties. I know the supersweets are supposed to be isolated from each other but I've often had SE varieties growing side by side. The Serendipity can be isolated a little by time and distance but not much.

Today I planted Anasazi Sweet Corn. I picked the last of the English peas and yanked them up. Then I tucked in the little corn seeds in the dirt and watered them in good.

So now I have Peaches N' Cream, Painted Mountain and Anasazi corn planted. I have a package of Oaxacan Green corn. Green corn, I had to have some of that. We'll see if it is good or not. I'll plant it in the duck pen when the ducks move out.
