So the pear tree had been confusing me; it was the only one with aphids, it didn't seem like the aphids could be causing late leaves, etc. Mystery solved. Pear tree #3 is my missing apple tree. The third pear tree died last year and never took root. I had been so sure that there was a second surviving apple tree, but figured I'd mis-remembered. It answers a lot, though I feel pretty silly about it
