Corn Thread for 2014

Prior to this year, an organic gardener friend of mine planted wonderful corn... which we really enjoyed and froze by the pound. Unfortunately, her husband passed away this winter. So, I am going to try a small patch of corn. I have Golden Bantam Sweet Corn. 80 days, they promise me. I think I will pick up a couple different varieties next time I am out. I thought I had more than 2 seed packs.

I dug out 3 dump wagon loads of composted leaves from the chicken run this morning and mulched the peaches N' Cream corn. It was about half composted and half leaves.

Bay,! when did you plant your peas? Mine are up but they are only about 3 inches!? are they good for cold weather?
Steve are you using seeds from burpee? or one of the other companies? why can't you plant super sweets close together? I thought I had a huge garden going now with the addition of the 28 x 32 I just tilled but wow It seems small in comparison!!!

i know this subject was mentioned somewhere before, but does anyone start their corn seeds early for transplanting when it is warm enough? i'm afraid the Glass Gems may need a little head start since i don't know how many days they could take. and being in an area with a short growing season (around 90 or less days), i want to be sure to give them enough time to grow.

Stokes, Johnny's and Harris seed mostly, @the1honeycomb .

It is confusing. Since I'm not growing a supersweet, I think I'm okay. If it gets any more confusing, I might just go back to the simple route of only the SE varieties.

It looks like a synergistic variety doesn't have the serious isolation demands of the supersedes. You can read about those rascals, and the other types here: LINK. (First time I can remember using University of Delaware info but they seem to lay it out more clearly than some horticulturalists.)

@the1honeycomb I planted the English peas on January 23. The snow and ice storms we got-2 of each one-threw them off. We only got 3 small pickings and the vines were starting to die back, so I pulled them and planted the corn. English peas were a bust this year for me. :(

My Painted Mountain corn is up!! :weeeLittle green spears were showing Thursday, now they are about an inch high. Growing is so much fun, even when things don't go right. When things do go right, it's spectacular.

Yes! I plant each seed in a small milk container and plant them in the garden (tearing the bottom out) once danger of frost is gone. I don't have an overly large corn planting so it works for me.

My Anasazi corn is starting to come up!! :weeeI will plant butterbeans in this same bed in a few more weeks, like I did last year. But this time I have T-posts in the ground and a hay twine trellis for them to climb on.
