Asian Long Beans Thread 2014

I have sent several of you seeds for the Thai #3 Asian Long Beans. So this is our thread for this year.

This is the link for my green bean garden in 2012 and 2013. Thought I would start a thread for us to post pictures, progress, and all about these green beans.

I'll start off. I planted the beans last week on April 16, they started coming up Monday, April 21. I have the trellis made with hay twine on 3 T-posts. The bed is about a foot and a half wide and 12 feet long. I planted 34 seeds. This should make tons of green beans. I can't wait to hear about other's progress on these beans.

NOT FAIR!!!!! I planted mine on April 13th and they are NOT up yet!!!
I went to lowes, bought a tiller. Brought it home and tilled a new garden 32' x 28'. I shoveled the dirt into perfect rows (measured with a tape measure) and marked with a pretty little marker. Checked every morning and every evening for the last 10 days I feel like an over due expectant mother I have talked to them, they have been rained on I wait and wait!! . I also got Beans from Jay, still waiting! I am the one who gets a pedi and has to pull the sock off her dried polish because I didn't wait long enough before putting my socks on
I am excited, and ready for some beautiful beans!! Maybe the soil is not good?!! Maybe the birds ate them no I would have seen something Alas I work Thursday and Friday eves so I may see progress on Sat!! Thanks again for the seeds!!!

Normally, I don't plant beans quite this early, but it has ended up pretty warm here lately, so I may get mine planted soon. I was going to get a cattle panel to bend into a tunnel, but I somehow can't visualize me bringing a cattle panel home strapped to the top of my Toyota. DH's truck has been out of commission lately, and he hasn't been in a hurry to fix it (long story) so I think I will devise some kind of trellis. I'm sure looking forward to seeing them grow.

@the1honeycomb you'll get beans soon! It will be fun for us to compare growing these beans--if they will ever come up!! LOL

nothing yet! maybe when I go out tomorrow would love to compare them I know your seasons comes sooner. I know they will come just have no patience

We grew those last year and were disappointed with the taste. They produced a lot of 12-18" beans but we couldn't find a way to cook them that was tasty. Cutting them up into six inch lengths and sauteing them in olive oil and garlic was a disaster. Like eating chalk, except without the taste. Then we shelled some and steamed them like edamame but still, yuk... Dry, mealy, no taste. Cooking them the old fashion way like Mama cooked green beans produced something we decided not to put on the table. If anyone finds a way to cook them we'd like to try their method.

@JimWWhite are you sure they were Thai #3 from Baker Creek? I have grown these beans for 4 years and we eat them like crazy. I give them away and people ask for more. I find them to be tender, tasty and my favorite green bean. I stir fry them with other veggies, steam and add butter, fry up a skillet of bacon, drop chopped beans in and crumble up the bacon and stir fry them. I have baked them in green bean casserole, dipped in buttermilk, rolled in meal and fried in hot oil-YUMMY!

Mine grow to 2' to 3' and I pick them when they are about the diameter of a pencil. If I feel a hollow place or seed, then I didn't pick them soon enough and I let that bean go to seed. They produce like mad until a hard killing frost. They are the best green bean I've ever grown. So sorry that you did not have a good experience with them.

Sorry, Baymule but I don't have the packet anymore. There were Asian beans and they were advertized to grow up to 2 feet. We just couldn't find a way to cook them that was appetizing. Your recipe sounds great. We tried just sauteing them in olive oil with a bit of chopped garlic with salt and pepper.

I need to get outside and take pics of the bean vines. They are swarming, but no blooms yet. A friend at church bragged on her beans-I gave her seed and hers are already producing!

I got a lot of vines growing all over the place, but no blooms I was afraid mine were dead! they are all over the corn the giant sunflowers and all the tomato stakes! nice!!
