Many of you have read my post about Paris, our Great Pyrenees, if not, here is a link to her story.
http://www.backyardherds.com/thread...heep-goats-or-chase-bears-hawk-post-26.23771/

I have a funny to tell ya'll. I ordered 20 ducks, 3 fawn and white Runners for their eggs and 17 Pekins to send to that fabulous duck resort in my utility room, called freezer camp. They are in a pen, attached to the chicken coop. Paris has ignored them. If their insane quacking has bothered her, she has had good manners and not complained. They are real idiots. When I go in the pen to feed and water them, they panic and trample all over each other, like a Black Friday sale gone bad. I have never had animals that wouldn't come to me, at least at feeding time. These goofy ducks are so hysterical, that I don't think I will even have a twinge of guilt when I butcher them, which will be soon. And it the Runners don't straighten up, they will join the Pekins in the Freezer.

Our son came to visit and we were sitting in the back yard, enjoying the spring afternoon. Paris came to us for petting and attention. I had told Layne, our son about the dumb ducks behavior, so he walked to their pen, raised his arms and loudly said RAH! RAH! RAH! He wanted to see for himself if they really did stampede, and they did. Before anybody gets their panties in a wad, we treat these ducks very well and do not abuse them. This was just something dumb my son did. Well.....Paris launched off the deck barking her LOUD bark, her I'M SERIOUS bark and hit Layne on his butt with her front paws. Paris put her nose in the small of his back, still barking, plainly saying, THIS IS A WARNING-I WILL BITE YOU.

We were stunned. Layne immediately dropped his arms and spoke kindly to Paris in the high pitched tone we use when praising her. She stopped barking, got off his butt and he petted her. Everything was just hunky-dory then. Layne praised her and said good dog. We were laughing our heads off. I praised her and loved her, she was all friendly with Layne like nothing happened. He was very impressed with her protectiveness of the ducks and her restraint of warning him BEFORE she bit him. Paris was just doing her job. Those are HER ducks and she protects them. What an awesome dog.

How funny! She knows her job! I am going to try and remember your duck stories, next time I am tempted by them...strange they haven't warmed up to you by now. No accounting for how dumb these critters can be!

Well Bay, the insane behavior from the ducks can be attributed to the runners as that is their norm. As for the Pekins they are much more docile. I had 4 Pekin ducks and 1 drake that hatched out 96 ducklings and they did not show the described insane behavior. :hu They all came running to anyone at the sight of the one carrying the feed bucket and I had NO problems picking them up for a date with the knife when I invited them to freezer camp. :drool I would suggest that you switch out the runners for Khaky Campbels as they are great egg layers and also way less flighty. ;)

Good girl Paris :) don't ya' just LOVE a pyre :love

We have had peckins, runners, and khakies, they ALL act like that (for us anyway) raised as ducklings by us and at over a year old, they still acted like if you some much as looked at them you were killing them, they never let you get anywhere near them, and still stampeded over each other :idunno

I went to the feed store and followed my ears to a tub full of baby ducks. I put my hand in there and they all ran to me. My own ducks hate me....... I don't get it. That's ok, I tell them every day they are stupid and I am going to eat them. BWAHAHAHA!!

I love Paris. She was free because she killed chickens. What stupid people. Glad they were stupid, because with love, patience and time, Paris has grown up to be the most awesome dog ever!
