The evergreen Magnolias make seed pods that are almost like Pinecones. Very ancient Dicots.

Oh, just checked. In 1990 Botanists removed the term Dicot and replaced it with EUDICOT, and apparently removed Magnolias from its inclusion!

Also search wikipedia for Dicot and then for Eudicot.

Ducks, I just checked and mine is a 'Jane' too. You can plant it now and water it in good. That should help wake it up.

THANKS, JOURNEY!! I was thinking I'd need to wait until it had flowered.
I am SOOOO glad That I took the time to read up on it. I am convinced that my location will work well--on the east side of the house, lawn between the house and street. There should easily be enough room 15 ft. from the foundation and the house should help it next winter.
Now, I just need to "Call J.U.L.I.E." and make sure that there are no power or gas lines in my selected spot. :D

Just reporting that my Magnolia tree has a gorgeous flower about to open...SOOOOO, it survived the coldest winter yet here, even withOUT any wind protection.
I've called J.U.L.I.E., to get flags for any underground electric or gas--they're coming to mark it tomorrow. They told me to use white spray paint to mark where I want to dig. My tree is going in directly east of the house, so it should have some protection next winter. I'm fencing it in to keep away the STUPID squirrels and rabbits who have been eating my tulips this Spring!!!! :barnie
I'll take before and after pictures this Saturday.

I was worried about my tree. It is planted along the road, with all the snow plowing , it was covered in snow all winter. When I went up to country this weekend it was covered in buds. I think they are hardier then people realize.

Magolia tree is IN THE GROUND!!! Sorry, no pics until later...
J.U.L.I.E. flagged my dig spot, and used red spray paint to write:
"AMRN, OK", (Ameren, IL, Electric, Okay.) They also had a little red flag on the spot. My instructions said that this meant no electric or gas lines underneath.
I dug deeper and 1 1/2 x wider than it needed, filled with some of the dirt in the pot and filled it in. The soil was really churned up, so I'm wondering if maybe there had been a tree on the spot in the past? (My property's house is over 100 years old)
I planted about 13 feet east of my foundation, so it should be far enough away from the house to not cause any problems. I also planted it in the same direction it had been sitting, in the pot, in my garden bed, since last October. One flower is fading and two are about to open up. Then, it'll be all leaves this summer.
FUNNY, I soaked it and THEN, we had two inches of rain from late afternoon through today, then tomorrow, more rain--I'm pretty sure that it will get a thorough soaking!

I think I am going to have to dig mine up and move it. Mine is too close to the house. Sounds like you thought it through better than I did!

Here's some info I found on Jane Magnolias at Arbor Day. They do say it is a dwarf magnolia at least. I don't know what I was thinking when I planted it. I hate to dig it up now that it is settled in. :\

If you have it close to the road where they salt, you probably SHOULD move it. Our little town never salts the roads in the winter--just plows and not often enough. I planted about midway, house to street, and there is a sidewalk next to the house and another sidewalk next to a spot to park, adjacent to the very little traffic street. (We have 7 homes on our street, 5 across the street and 3 on my side.)
I have been wanting a Magnolia Tree ever since I saw that my neighbors to the north had an established one, Spring, 2000.
The current occupants are good friends of mine. I told them that I had a better location for MY tree bc I'm planting it about 200 years further South, and it's a Southern Tree! LOL
