Hey Russ, the beans on the vining CdC 226 have a purple blush starting to form whereas the other CdeC's in the pot don't seem to have it. Not dry enough to pick for seed yet but soon :). I'll post a picture of the pods and seed when I shell them out.

Annette

This CdC 226 story will be interesting to follow up on. I will predict that the bean growing the runner will give you a white seed this year, but if you plant them again next year it will probably change, and you may get a combination of semi-runner and non runner bush plants. I would venture a guess that the cross happened here in my garden last year in '13. CdC 226 was exposed to true bush non-runner snap bean varieties on the adjacent rows left and right of it. In the row that it was growing in it was wedged between two varieties that grew runners.

This year in my bean garden I had planted some Blue Jay and Jacob's Cattle seeds, and in both plantings some of the plants are growing runners.

Hi 1honeycomb,

The Maria Zeller you sent. Are these the ones the climb like a pole bean?
Also do the Orca's grow runners or are these the ones that are of True Bush form?

The tans seeds look like one of two varieties that I have seen. They could be Bountiful or Early Yellow Six Weeks. Do any of those two variety names ring a bell with you?

Holy beans!!!

The WEAVER pole beans started crisping up some REALLY HUGE fat pods, and there they are, with the large creamed coffee brown beans.

Awww, the sound of deseeding crispy pods!

So there I was thinking, those have to be the hugest fattest, not quite the longest, bean pods ever...

...then came the HANNA HANK variety...

(I can see why Hanna likes Hank so much! LOLzzz!)

Even bigger and gnarlier pods. I mean, I think these must be the pods they used on that 1950's movie...

Nice seeds in it too. I guess it can only do a few pods at a time, but, HOLY HANNA BANANA!

=====

Evening Moon: No 2 plants are the same. The very best one looks for the world like it crossed with a Black Turtle. Nice, gorgeous shiny, productive black seeds in well filled pods, very healthy nice bush plant. Another plant is floppy but good, with rounded white seeds, and another is a nice bush with longish small white seeds. Not sure if any Evening Moon plant is purebred, but there are 2 more that have not yet ripened pods.

Still offline at home. On WIFI here in town. Had a Thyroid blood test today. Pretty sure the hyperthyroid is in a bad phase. Other than body temp feeling miserable while 95 degrees plus outside, I'm fine.

Sure glad I planted a couple extra red eyed ranger plants. The first 3 in the front part of the garden died from the heat after making a few poor seeds. Now getting some nice ones. Whew.

Junin: Looks like my Junin, not the outcross, both plants of Junin seem to be F1 plants. One is white/with black pinto markings, the other is that dark pinto typical of F1, black with silverygrey.

Falcon Outcross, 3 extra plants in the back bed. The last 2 to produce are making slightly larger seeds. Those seem most interesting to me.

Be back on soon as I can. So far the service tech has not made it up the hill on 2 tries. Maybe I should go get him! Satellite techs are geniuses, but seem to have trouble making it up the roads.

Hi Marshall,

Aren't those Weaver and Hanna Hank just incredible beans. Oh Just gotta love em. I'm growing both of them for snap beans this year and they are both stringless and tender when cooked. In fact I had an omelette for breakfast this morning with a bunch of steamed Hanna Hank pods on the side. OH Delicious! I got them from a Canadian gardener last year. A Member of Seeds Of Diversity Canada. Hanna Hank pods are really nice looking when picked young enough for snap pods. William Woys Weaver the food historian who lives in Pennsylvania believes that the Weaver bean may have come from a small seed company from California back in the 1920's.

After I got Evening Moon to settle down way back in the day when I first discovered it. The bean always gave me white seed with a flesh toned blotch around the eye. So I must have grown some F1 hybrids last year and gave you some F2 seeds and now you are seeing the change of the seed coat color and getting the F3 seed this year. Same for the Junin. I grew F1's last year and gave you F2's. The cross had to happen in the person's garden I got Junin from, and that would be Astrid Storm from Germany. I didn't grow either Evening Moon or Junin this year. Probably won't for several more years.

I planted just 5 of the Falcon outcross seeds. Will see what I get out of mine.

It's amazing how many new seed coats we are getting out of all these beans. I have never seen anything quite like this growing beans back in the 70's and 80's. Of course then again now with the internet I never got so many beans back in those days like I do now from so many people in all kinds of different places.

Did I give you a bean cross called Striped Thrush? I planted some this year and they are growing as a true bush plant, and have long beautifully handsome green pods with bold purple stripping on them. I should see If I can get a good photo of them Thursday when I return to my big bean plot.

Your Tech guy could be afraid of heights. I mean you are almost at 2,000 ft. elevation.

Anyway I hope they figure out your connection problems. It's always so nice to have you around here more often.

That Hanna Hank sounds quite good from what I was reading online. Got to love steamed beans with a meal.

I second that it would be good to have Marshall back more often, once every 5 days is too little.

Russ, thanks for the info on Hanna Hanks, I have some but haven't grown them yet I'll put them on next year's grow list. I love my snap beans :).

Here's a picture of the pods on the twining bush bean CdeC 226 this is the purple blush appearing on this bean.

Hi Annette,

You would love these Weaver beans as well. Nice looking wide flat pods and another great snap bean for steam cooking. Can I send you some?

That CdC 226 cross pods looks neat with the reddish pink blush on them. Thanks for the photo.
