I have had the same guy cut my grass for 4 years. He cuts it once a week,so 4 cuttings a month. In early July he told me he was going to miss a week because of family vacation. I just got Julys bill and was charged for 4 cutting while only 3 where done. Do landscapers get paid vacation days from clients?

Nyboy, I don't know about landscapers charging. Is this the first time this has happened? If he does a good job and is reliable, I would go ahead and pay it. I would consider it a "tip" and it might keep encouraging him to stay with you.

Mary has a very good point. But I think I would at least call and ask him about it. It may be that his billing program just automatically billed you.

@baymule is so smart (I thought the same thing)! It could be an innocent mistake in billing. I know there are some businesses -- such as childcare -- that expect payment for holidays. I have no experience with yard workers. I am the yard worker and I never get a vacation day.

(back the next day) Good idea with the tip, but I would ask him what's expected before paying the money. It could easily prevent future problems.

Just WHY does a certain group of the workforce expect to get a tip every time even when they provide just doing their job or mediocre one or just plain bad attitude ? Why do these groups expect a certain percentage of the total bill as a tip ? A tip is supposed to be a bonus for providing superior service. Frankly, I resent getting a bill at a restaurant or hotel or ??? where upon the printed billing is a space for "gratuity ________ " . I leave a cash bonus as a reward on the table or in the person's hand and leave the billing space blank. This way I know that the reward goes to the person providing superior service and not shared with those that do not.

If you tip on credit card, lots of places hold out the processing fee from the tip, so the wait person gets a reduced tip.
