I'm starting to think it's not even worth trying anymore. Someone let their dog run through my garden (or kid) my corn is all flattened and smashed on top of my squash, zuchini, and green beans. The only thing that hasn't been thoroughly squashed are the tomatoes. It's too dark to see much other than the corn is completely hopeless, its been smashed at the roots. This is the first garden I've had thats been any kind of success, and as soon as I get something growing someone else has to come along and destroy it.

I wish there were more growers and fewer destroyers.

That's terrible AMKuska! I'm so sorry.:hugs
Obviously this happened while you were away. Are your neighbors that irresponsible???
I hope that it doesn't ruin your enthusiasm for growing things. Maybe there is a better place or way to fence it securely?

I am not sure. The neighbors on my side of my street to the right and left are wonderful. The new neighbors across the street seem quite nice. They have dogs but they are very responsible and keep the dogs fenced. Unfortunately there are 3 other families on my street who just let their dog out the front door and hope it comes back. These are the people that are causing this neighborhood so much grief. One of those has had animal control called on them because their dog was trapping neighbors in a corner and not letting them leave, the other has a dog who has bitten so severely that it has required medical treatment. Not nice dogs to have running around.

I don't want to call my neighbors irresponsible because of 3 families, but those 3 just seem to be ruining everything.

I was actually thinking that for next year, but there's a couple little kids that go tearing through my yard and I'd hate to shock one. :-/ I touched a horse fence once when I was a kid. Those suckers hurt!

But they only hurt once.... Think of it as part of their rural education.

... could those 'kids tearing through your yard' be the corn smashers???

So sorry to hear about the damage. If the police / animal control is called often enough on the bad dogs something will get done. (Hopefully.)

I'm sorry, @AMKuska !

The neighbors with the "let the dogs run every morning" attitude were the reason I fenced my front yard. Talk with your other neighbors and animal control. If you have a mail carrier walking, talk to the Post Office.

The careless neighbors were talked to by animal control after I showed the people there pictures of the dogs in the road. I'm not sure if it helped but they moved ... probably now tormenting some other neighbors.

There is a percentage of folks who will be as careless as they think that they can get away with.

I had a front yard full of dahlias the summer after that picket fence went up. Oh, and there are cool weather vegetables and cover crops you can put in now.

You must have a leash law where you live. EVERYTIME you see one of dogs running loose call and report it. Squeeky wheel gets the oil. So sorry about your garden, can you get a cheap wire fence at big box store?
