Elephant Ear Question

I just got my Better Homes and Gardens for August and they have an article on elephant ears. It says to keep soil consistently moist as they are water guzzlers. They also like hot summers. Well they are not gonna like the bay area! They don't look as big as the pictures on ebay of them. I suppose they would get hugh if planted in the ground.

Mary, We don't have hot summers, comparatively. Don't look at our weather right now- we're sizzling! But the heat doesn't last very long, and our nights are chilly, in the 50s, so you should be able to grow fine EEs. I got mine from Costco, in late fall when they get all the bulbs and bagged bare root perennials in.

eta- oops! I mean late winter...

I love that pot, is it ceramic?

Mary that pot is beautiful!!!
The ones that I have (that actually sprouted..) came up slow, looked like spikes for DAYS, then little minis (like yours is now) then suddenly they were over the heat pump. Keep it damp and maybe a little fertalizer boost?

Yes Thistle, the pot is ceramic. I paid $25 for it years ago. At that time, I discovered a pottery place by the freeway where I would buy seconds. I have a another round hugh pot in black that I paid $45 and a green one that I paid $35. There is also a squareish one that I think I paid $35. These size pots are all over $100 at places like Home Depot. I love my pots and it's really hard to tell they are seconds. Sometimes there may be a little spot where the glaze ran but I think it adds character.
