lesa sorry about your vine. I have 3 sweet autumn and now a sweet summer in other parts of the yard and love them. This is a real problem area no soil all rock and next to street so road salt in wnter.
Ugh, it does sound like you may have to build the area up and try to protect it from road salt. Something like thistle suggested?

Yup, I think Thistle has the idea...if you don't want to do a raised bed, what about a wonderful, huge pot of something at the base of the columns?

Each pillar has a large pot (about 5 feet tall) I never have luck with plants overwintering in containers. Should try and post some photos.
That is a LARGE pot! I also can not overwinter in pots unless they get moved indoors. That is not going to happen with a pot that BIG. With big pots I just figure to plant annuals each spring. It is fun to change them up each year for a new look.

Threre are 3 of them I asked my nephew if he could go pick up some pots I bought on CL, can't write what he said when he saw how big they where lol.
Your Poor Nephew must think his uncle is just a wee bit cuckoo ;) I assume it is the same one that got asked to help remove trees and then plant trees !!!!
