The Tomatoes I Planted This Year And My Opinion Of Them...

Well - today I discovered 3 LARGE yellow tomatoes in my Mystery Heirloom row. Google tells me that they're probably Brandywine Yellows. The one I had on my BLT for supper was delicious. That one weighed in at 1 1/2 lbs. The other two are similar in size. I hadn't been looking too closely at them because I thought they just weren't ripening, but tonight I looked more closely and could tell that they were ripe. A very good tomato. I would plant them again.

Oh yeah - I almost forgot about the Fireballs. These also came from some old seed that my friend gave me. They grew well, healthy plants, nicely shaped medium to large sized fruits on them. Haven't taste tested them yet.

Yeah, I got mine in a swap. These were pithy throughout and hard as rocks. Everything else in that patch did well. No good reason for it otherwise. I will try again with a reputable source for seed.

Sounds like a seed issue for sure, those sound terrible! I hope you have better luck next time

Yes, many of us have GARDEN GONGS, they sound best when we throw tomatoes at them!

Today I harvested everything that looked like it was ripening. I had a goodly handful of Snow White Cherry tomatoes -- yummy, like candy!
The Spoons are not worth the trouble unless you have really little ones who might enjoy the little things. Each tomato is about the size of a garbanzo bean; all skin.
I managed to find one Abe Lincoln; not quite ripe, but I wouldn't want the fowl to find it, and a Beaver Lodge Slicer that wouldn't make an individual salad, much less slices for a sandwich. Maybe the next one will be bigger?
Several Stupice have been picked. Most are too small to be a canner and I don't like the green shoulders. Give me my Rutgers for canning.
The Giant Syrian are the biggest I've gotten yet this year. I haven't cut into one because I want to wait a bit for it to ripen more.
There are plenty more varieties waiting to ripen.

@bobbi-j, you could just save some of the seeds from your Ace 55. That way you would have them for next year and several more years! (Presuming it is not a hybrid)

Unfortunately, it is a hybrid. I do have some of the seeds left, though, so hopefully I can plant more next year.

Hal - I haven't forgotten about the Health Kick taste test - it just seems like it's taking forever for those darn things to ripen on the counter. They are apparently a firm fruit... I'm going to try one soon, I promise! They're probably ripe and it just doesn't look or feel like it.

I found another one of those nice, big, tasty yellow tomatoes. They are delicious!

OK, I finally tried the Health Kick tomato. It was... quite mediocre. It tasted more like a hybrid than an heirloom. Not much flavor, really.

I used to work in a nursery and all I got were complaints about the flavor, I grew them once just to test and would save about the same as you did.

My experience with Health Kick was limited by the fact that none ripened. Supposed to be a 67 day tomato, I was to ticked! And, kicked it to the curb ...

Once the temperatures begin to drop, every thing slows. Health Kick came to a full stop.

In a very immature moment, I looked at the plants I had, loaded with green fruit. I had tasted not a single one! I turned and walked away from them without bringing any into the house to ripen. Frost was predicted for the next morning.
