My brother and his wife live in Napa. Their bed did a shake, rattle, and roll at 3:30 am. They are fine but not to happy from with their sudden wake up call from their beauty sleep. Some of the damage was in their kitchen ... a 2 lb. jar of honey fell from the pantry and onto the floor, breaking the glass jar and the honey went all over the pantry covering everything from it as well as the cabinets and kitchen floor. Took 12 hours to clean up this mess as well as other items in the house. Didn't see structural damage to his house on a fast first inspection. Then my brother went into the garage and HORORS ! :barnie His completely restored ( he did all of the work) antique Porche was smashed quite badly when his tool cabinet crashed into the side and a tall metal storage cabinet chuck full of all types of auto parts, paint, oil, greese, etc. fell on it's roof. He still wasn't able to check on his other 8 Porches ( 3 of which he races ) stored in another garage that he owns in downtown Napa. He heard that his other buildings had only minor damage as well as one rental home. His limo ( used for his vinery tour business ) had no damage that he could see on a fast first inspection. His neighborhood and downtown Napa had quite a few water mains and gas lines break making getting into some areas of town difficult to access this soon.

Not to make funny of your brother's Earthquake problems, but I wish one of my 9 Porches were damaged.

My brother buys them after they are wrecked, rusted out, blown engine for their parts. Then he may use 2-3 or more to make one. He may race some, or he may just sell after they are put in working condition. His home car is an antique that he personally restored after years of waiting for parts.

What can I say... he LOVES Porches ! :love My brother buys Porches through auction, insurance companies , estate sales, or individuals. Most of them are totaled cars eather from accidents or blown engines or rusted out bodies. He may take 2 or more cars to make one with is own 2 hands as he is one h*ll of a machanic. He then races and / or sells or keep to drive himself or for his wife. :p

bobm, even though it is "just" a car, I feel for your brother. He has definitely put in a lot of hours, sweat, and years restoring them. It must feel terrible to lose one after going through all that. My husband has always dreamed of having an old porsche.

I just got my old truck home. It has been overhauled from transmission to brakes, tons of parts..... needs interior redone and paint. 1984 Chevy Silverado stepside with the wood boards in the bed. No, I haven't put the labor of love in it that your brother has, @bobm but I would hate a hurricane to drop a tree on it. (although most of the trees are already gone.....)

I love old sports cars, ever since I was a child I just loved them. I've always had a soft spot for Porches, but if I'm in the position one day to buy myself a toy like that, I'd get a Maserati rather. I saw one at a dealer some time ago, beautifully fixed up and at a VERY good price. We can dream, hey?

I spoke with my brother last night... no damage to their house other than broken glassware and 2 pounds of spilled honey, his garage in so full of strewn odds and ends that he can't even walk in. He did a complete retrofit on downtown buildings when he bought and the only damage is several decorative bricks came down. Only 2 of the rental houses have a little bit of sheetrock damage. He will be flying to Alaska in 2 weeks for a hunting trip.
