Corn Thread for 2014

Don't feel bad, @thistlebloom!! I think a lot of us had issues this year, squirrely weather (or moose weather LOL) time and the lack of, and just things happening. I had a gorgeous stand of Peaches N' Cream that didn't do squat. I got enough Painted Mountain for seed next year and maybe a couple batches of cornbread. I got several wizened Oaxacan Green Dent ears, enough for seed and a batch of cornbread. I am dying to see if I get green cornbread!

This thread is so we can compare varieties, success, failure, bugs, growing and harvest. The corn in my freezer came from a sale at the grocery store.......

My glass gem is producing ears, it's very vigorous but don't know if I'll have enough time to see what it can do.

If not we'll try again next year

@Jared77, I still think that if you pull a few plants at the last minute, and hang them to dry in a covered spot, the roots will have enough nutrition to carry the corn through drying stage. That is what I do with many of the veggies I want for seed.

Good to know. The plants are still doing good albeit a little dry. I can feel a sizable ear on them so hopefully they'll get to that point. I got a late start on them but I'd definitely try them again if this years batch doesn't produce.

I should say something about a new "sy" sweet corn I have. It's Serendipity. No, really.

An sy variety is synergistic. Here is what Wikipedia says: ". . .sy (for synergistic) adds the sh2 gene to some kernels (usually 25%) on the same cob as a se base (either homozygous or heterozygous)."

Forever, I have had se corn because a good number of them germinate well in cold soil. I have Ambrosia, Sugar Buns and the last of the Sugar Snow. Yes, even the white and yellow varieties are bicolors with this kind of a mix .

Serendipity is doing great with big, beautiful ears! Of course, it may be mixing with the others. This might be a problem with some varieties but synergistic types, no problem.

Trying to figure out how they developed these hybrids has made me realize that I don't know how we get bicolor corn!

We picked the first ears of sweetcorn today -- it is white. Looking it up, I see that I planted "Stowell's Evergreen" not "Country Gentleman" as I had thought. I wasn't impressed with the corn, but it was picked a bit early for our holiday picnic. I'll see how the later pickings taste.

Will do if the seed germinates

The ND Sunshine did well. All picked by Aug. 29th, about 72 days. Froze about 90 ears, cut of the cob about 140 ears- 5 quarts and 12 pints . About 40 ears, with the husks, in the refrigerator. About 40 ears gifted. Raccoons took about 40 of the nicest ears of course. B@$t@d$ breached my security. We ate many fresh and some smaller or a few with worms are current chicky treats and another 35 or 40 drying for seed. cutting back next season . The original plan was to dry the most of it down and use it in the ration for the broilers but that all changed with the varmit invasion.
The Earthtones variety also is doing well despite it being blown to the ground several times through the summer. Only 22 plants there. Hope I get a few ears before the coons take it all.
