@ninnymary Good for you. I am not sure I would have challenged him or stood my ground. (I can be a whimp that way.) In a way you did him a favor. From now on I am sure he will tell potential clients up front!

When ever I need to hire someone I always go to ads that say free estimates.

Mary going by the photos of your home and garden, you have such good taste. Just go to nursery ask for low mantance plants, get mulch, plant. You will do great and save money.

Cane, I think you're right. A few minutes into the conversation, he made a statement alluding to the fact that his area of design was different than what I wanted. We both knew he wasn't going to get the job.

Thistle, the high end designer ($2,000 for plan) did drive by and emailed me the estimate. I didn't see her yet she did take some time to drive by. The other low end designer came and didn't charge me. I felt this guy was kind of sleazy for charging me when he didn't tell me anything that I didn't already know.

Nyboy, I probably will end up doing everything myself. I just feel that I have to cover all areas/bases. There is one more thing I'd like to do. That's knock on the door of this house 3 blocks away that has a beautiful yard. The design won't quite work for my space but whoever designed it did a beautiful job.

Mary, you need to have more confidence in your own ability.
It's a small area, simple and tasteful will have the best effect.
You can do that with your eyes shut!

Well, I decided to give everyone an update on my front lawn. My husband hurt his knee (just had an MRI done) so he couldn't do anything for a few weeks. But I did decide against the artificial grass because the blades were just too short for my taste and I knew that would forever bug me.

In the last couple of weeks we have built a brick patio in the space to the left of the steps. My husband built me a beautiful redwood trellis and that has been installed. We planted a bouganvilla on it. We placed a blue bench that I found on craiglist in that space. The bench had just been refinished with an ugly blue color. I was going to wait a year before I repainted but once we put it in there, the blue does pick up the color from my poor man's stain glass that is in my front bay window. In front of this brick area, I planted 3 boxwoods. Everything looks sooooo good and very English. Ha

I've decided to resod the lawn. But it will be smaller since I've planted some boxwoods at one end and will plant some perennials at the other end by the sidewalk. I really needed grass by the driveway. Parking is terrible and we park 2 small cars there. You wouldn't be able to get out since plants would be there. I was going to do a mix of perennials but I'm leaning to planting just lavendar.

My sister has also given me an old lamp post that I will spray paint black and place in the lawn. It is going to look great there. We also have an iron mailbox that my husband has to put in cement that really compliments the house.

I can't wait to show everyone the final results!

Yes, please! It sounds lovely in my imagination, but I think I like your taste and want to see the real thing.

I hope your DH is all better.
