Hi. I am a first-time user on this site. I am putting down grass seed this fall, and have been reading that fine-screened mulch would be good to put on top, to give seed good chance of rooting. Is this true and where do I buy this? Thank you.

Hi WImgjean, welcome to TEG. Hope you will share some more info about your garden, what you grow, rough idea of where you're located, and oh, we love pictures!! It will take a few posts until you're allowed to put pictures, so keep chatting with us!!

A couple years ago, i spread grass seed, and used lawn clippings as mulch. I mowed the lawn, let the clippings dry, then its easy to spread a light layer of dried grass over your newly seeded area. You could shake it on by hand or with an upside down rake. Worked great, just keep in mind you want a light layer so you dont choke out the new seedlings. You could also use a lot of other things you might have on hand or get for free - straw, pine needles. Beware of hay that may have seeds on it that might sprout along with your grass seed. You can also buy all kinds of mulch at various stores. Big box stores, garden centers, hardware stores. You just dont want something that has huge chunks, like some large pine bark mulches. Good luck!

P.s. the mulch is to help retain moisture, as bare soil will get very dry fast, and your new little seedlings will die. You will still have to water pretty often with a fine spray if you're not having regular rain. Sometimes several times a day until the grass is good and established.

Thank you for the idea of using dried grass. I was thinking of using fine compost or mulch because this boulevard could use some soil improvement.
Or would grass mulch be enough of a soil improvement on its own? I appreciate your help!

I don't know that there's ever "enough" soil improvement. You could put compost down, seed, then mulch. The only way i can imagine that you could overdo it is if there's too heavy of a mulch layer and the seedlings cant get sun. :D

I have made a lawn three months before and for that I used mulch at the top of the grass seed and that help my lawn grass to grow well and fast so I suggest you also to use mulch on the top pf the grass seed.
