I think you have received some very good comments so far. If I were you guys I would explain your situation to your friends and simply let them know that it's sometimes expensive to enjoy the really good things in life. They can make up their own mind if they want to buy it or not.

OK, now tell us how you make it. In detail of course. I have never made it but I would like to try. I make Kombucha all the time and I tried to make ginger ale once - big failure - but never rootbeer.

Real rootbeer. Made with sassafras, wintergreen and other random stuff. He carbonates it with yeast lets it sit until carbonated about 3 days. Then throws it into the fridge to drink when cold. The alcohol content is so low that the kids can drink it.
He uses swing top bottles instead of beer bottles with the cap because we learned they will blow off.

For a few years when I was a kid my folks made root beer, it was meant to be ready around Christmas time. They must have used yeast, because that was the predominate flavor to me. It was good stuff though, and I'm not sure why they stopped making it. They used glass bottles and had a capping dealy. I thought it was great fun drinking our own home made root beer.

@Smiles Jr. I have no idea what he puts in it. My job is to stir and make sure it doesn't boil. :) Apparently I'm good at that. We have learned letting it sit to long makes it over carbonated and gross. He (really my 9 year old) makes ginger ale too. It has a tendency to go bad if you don't watch it. She thinks it's great fun making her own soda. My son (5) likes to help manke cream soda because no matter what you do you smell like it for days.

I am in fly-over country here in south-est, central-est Wisconsin, but please feel free to drive by anytime you're passing from one side of the country to another. I am 'most always home. I can put on a feed -- nothing fancy -- but good and hearty country food.
