Good to know Carol when I was young and foolish I wasn't wearing one when in bad accident. I flew right though windshield, luckily had great plastic surgeon put my face back together.

Vehicles nationwide did not have to have seat belts until Jan 1, 1968.
New York was the 1st state for mandatory seat belt use Dec 1, 1984.
New Hamp. does not have mandatory seat belt use for adults.
In Mo we only just recently had to start using seat belts in trucks and our law is only enforced secondarily, which means you can't be stop and ticketed for not using you belt.
You can only be cited if they stop you for something else and you're not using your belt. Then I think it's only $10 fine!!!
You don need no stinken seat belts.

they've been trying to make it mandatory in NH for a long time to have seatbelts on. same thing with helmets when it comes to adults on motorcycles-not mandatory. it's the 'Live Free or Die' state after all and we seem to think that needs to be taken seriously. :idunnoi think most people here now wear their seatbelts. i've seen lots of people who get over the border into NH and pull over to take their helmets off. i never see them get over the border and take their seatbelts off.

Seat belt laws are passed by insurance companies. No one in government cares if we live or die but insurance companies do.

Yes, sort of, @seedcorn. Laws are passed by legislatures who are greatly $$ influenced $$ by insurance companies and their lobbyists. For obvious reasons, insurance companies are concerned primarily if our care after an accident is expensive or slight. The Government says it cares because the cost of higher medical bills and higher insurance affects all the rest of us.

@Smart Red I'm sorry, my life has taught me to pay very little attention to words but watch actions. By their actions, politicians only pass laws in favor of their pockets (highest bidder). They can justify anything.

@Nyboy Sounds like experience has taught you to wear seat belts.

I can remember being in California when seatbelts were mandated for new cars.

On the little secondary highways, the police would have cars passing through a check station. If your older car didn't have a seatbelt, you would be asked if you wanted a set.

For $10 I think it was, a couple of guys showed up, installed the belts in about 3 minutes! I was on my way and thinking, "what just happened?!"

Of course, it took me about 10 years before I became habituated to them. In my driving career, there have been 4 accidents, 2 involved nothing but bumpers, one - a bent fender.

Then there was that rollover in heavy snow when I found myself at one point - lying on the hood, still holding onto the steering wheel.

#Nyboy so glad the surgeon put your handsome face back together!

In Texas seat belts have been mandatory for sometime. Click it or ticket.
