Deer are weird. At one property they're eating the monarda, which is on just about every deer resistant plant list, and at a cabin on the south end of a lake they ate all the rhodies, but up in town at the north end they never touched them.
At one of my jobs in town with gangs of deer all over, the property has arborvitae surrounding a basketball court, the deer never touch it, but walk 50 yards to defoliate the arborvitae around a patio.
Deer around here love hydrangeas, even the Annabelles, but go for the macrophylla first.

Sunday I had a whole list of things that needed to get done in garden. My help ( nephew) never showed up, so little on list got done. The one thing I did make sure of was planting the Hydrangea.
