Micro Greens

Since micro greens are all the buzz nowadays I've decided to give it a try. I usually use the greenhouse to start plants in March and April and the rest of the year it gets little action other than storage. Not long ago I had a micro green salad and it was delicious. I also tried a pasta dish with the little buggers in it and it was also very good. I have heard that it is very high in nutritional value. So today I dug out a few plastic potting trays to give growing the micro greens a try.

Can you guys recommend what kind of seeds I should try? I don't know anything about it.

I've read it's all good, other than the plants in the nightshade family or other poisonous plants/greens.
I've seen on tv people grow flowers and many random plants in near darkness and eat them, makes them more tender and tasty or something.

Johnny's (micro LINK) has quite a selection.

I'd guess that all would be milder in flavor than older plants. So, if you really didn't care for arugula, you might change your mind if it's only 3 weeks old.

I've grown sprouts but I'm not much of a salad eater. So, my sprouts went in sandwiches in place of lettuce. I especially liked radish and alfalfa. Alfalfa on anybody's micro list ..?

I think that even though there are lots of choices in the mustard family, I'd limit those. In other words, if each of these 3, mizuna, radish & cress make up 25% of the mix, you'll have 75% with similar flavors. Celery and the amaranth family (beets, chard, orach, etc.) could figure in to tone down the spiciness.

I was just reading about hydroponics and growing of microgreens.

Came back to this thread and realized I didn't do the link to Johnny's ..! Sorry.

I now see what my problem was. Page #42 in the paper catalog doesn't seem to have a corresponding webpage. That's too bad, and something Johnny's should correct, unless I'm just not finding it.
