The sweet potatoes/yams we buy at the market are all sweet potatoes.
You just have two different varieties @secuono .

Yams are a different crop not sold domestically, grown mostly in Africa, and like Annette said they are huge things.

So the websites that tell you the difference are wrong then? Or can sweet potatoes be exactly the same in looks as a yam?

Which website? And no, SP are not easy to confuse with yams.



Unless you are buying your groceries in an international market you won't run across yams.

Here's one explanation:

What's a (Real) Yam?

Yams are native to Africa and Asia, with the majority of the crop coming from Africa. They are related to lilies, and can be as small as a regular potato or ridiculously jumbo in size (some grow five feet long!). Yams have a cylindrical shape with blackish or brown, bark-like skin and white, purple or reddish flesh.


Compared to sweet potatoes, yams are starchier and drier. True yams can be tough to find. They aren't carried in many local grocery stores, so your best chances of finding them are in international and specialty markets.

Hmm.
One said that yams have white flesh, brown darker rough tree bark-like skin and 1 blunt end.
While sweet potatoes have yellow flesh, copper and smooth skin and 2 pointy ends.
