Onions going On, going Down, Not going Gone

Seedcorn, unless you are at the South Pole, you can always go a bit South-er for your soil. Delta soil is said to be THE best for growing things. I'd probably go for trying some of that Southern soil myself.

Of course, I'm already the South-est I can get . . .

@Smart Red Not to be contrary but Wisconsin-even the most southern tip-will never be confused with the south.....now it could be confused with Denmark, northern Germany, Poland, etc....

The Midwest confuses me. It may have confused some of my ancestors. I don't know if I ever had a desire to visit Poland ... I could take a Google Street view and see what I think ...

That grandfather I was talking about in the Wonderful World thread grew up in Oklahoma but he was born in Arkansas. That makes sense in that they were people from Tennessee and on their way to OK. And yet, his father was born in southern Illinois! ... Shawneetown.

I don't think of Illinois as the South but Wikipedia has it at 37° 42′. Now, @so lucky is at 37° 18′. That's close and less than ½° but So Lucky lives in southern Missouri. I don't think that either political or physical boundaries conformed real well with lines of latitude. Nearly 200 years ago, there probably were lines of attitude and day-neutral garden varieties.

I have some friends that only want to grow Candy onions now.

Three tries and I have not had Candy do as well as Walla Walla ... or, Utah - which seems to grow better than WW ..


But, why not grow what you like? Like Candy - grow Candy . I learned long ago that my family ate more onions than most families. Doesn't make us popular at parties but, hey, there are trade offs to everything.

Here are the SV405's beginning to go down at the end of September. I think I should have just pulled them all then. Let them dry before we moved into this rainy month. I don't remember ever having such late onions.


Here are some of them with some of the largest Walla Walla's. The SV did grow a lot through their many months.
