    First Time Turkeys

You got me thinking Bob, so I got a list of purchases from our feed store. The total cost of feed, scratch, corn, wood shavings and the chicks themselves came to $500.00. That and the cost of processing comes out to about $5.28/lb. I can live with that knowing that they were well cared for and...

    First Time Turkeys

We figured our cost at about $7.00-$8.00 per pound so no it's not economically sound. But the entertainment value and knowing how the bird was raised and what it ate makes it worth it to me. Having home raised fowl to cook is a real treat for us as we love to cook and now we have a lot of meat...

    First Time Turkeys

Well we took the two largest turkey hens, 3 5 month old rooster and 4-4 year hens to be processed today. It only took a couple of hours and everybody is packaged and in the freezer. One of the turkeys is in the fridge for Tuesday and the other we cut into pieces and vacuum packed them. I was...

if Animal Wastes are such good Fertilizers

Hi Steve, it is the salts and ammonia in the urine killing the grass. Liquid humates will sequester the salts and help the soil in the root zone of the grass. As for the ammonia either dilute the area with water or use one of several products available for that very problem. Two that I know of...

What have you canned or preserved today?

Sunday we did 12 quarts of pickles, 3 quarts of tomatoes, and 12 pints of salsa. Also did one tray of sliced romas in the dehydrator with a pinch of salt and pepper. I have found my latest obsession and it's drying stuff. The possibilities are endless. :D

    First Time Turkeys

Well the girls are doing well and still getting bigger. Recently I noticed that a couple of them were doing their version of "squatting". Now every few days I find an egg in the run. It's the speckled one and is a little bigger than an extra large egg from the Easter Eggers. The shell is very...

    Dehydrating Peppers

Hi Collector, I would recommend slicing them into circles no more than 1/4" thick. As or temperature start out at 145 for the first few hours and then turn it down to 135 to finish. A word of warning, when grinding the dried peppers know that the dust in the air will get you. Jalapenos were...

    Dehydrating Peppers

Well it took almost 20 hours. Next things will be cut into smaller pieces. Very pleased with the results, dried ground Jalapenos smell like Heaven! :drool

    Dehydrating Peppers

That's right Thistle! Also what ever room you put the machine in is going to smell strongly of whatever you are drying... choose wisely:D

    Dehydrating Peppers

The dehydrator arrived today and I already have a couple of pounds of Jalapenos started. I think maybe I should have waited until tomorrow because according to the directions they will be ready between 8pm and 3am tomorrow. Lesson learned on reading the directions before using

    Leaves Changing

Saw some cottonwood trees south of Montrose Colorado last week that had some leaves with a hint of yellow... It's coming!

    Dehydrating Peppers

The goal here is to make seasoning blends with the chilies. We grew some Pasilla Bajio peppers along with the usual Jalapenos, Habaneros, and Anaheims. Since the will be no salsa being made this year I just wanted to get some good use from what made it through the hail storm. :)

    Dehydrating Peppers

I just found some information on this, and my new dehydrator is on it's way. Peppers can but cut up and dried and from the video I saw that's exactly what i was looking to do. :weee

    Dehydrating Peppers

The garden took a good hit from hail a week ago and many of the chili peppers were damaged. I am still planning on getting a food dehydrator but read that chilies should be left whole and on most units available that means you could only use the top tray. I was going to dry the peppers and...

    Preserving Chili Peppers

Hey Smiles, refer to the thread "Pepper Sauce" above this one for my process. ;)

    Pepper Sauce?

Thanks SG! That was the last of the season done on 10-7-2012. This year may be a little leaner but it is worth the effort. :)

    Pepper Sauce?

This is a process I have been working on the last few years. It involves using a charcoal grill and water soaked wood chips. When I make hot sauce it is whatever is ripe and ready to go that weekend. The pictures show the peppers, tomatoes and onions in pans with water in them on the...

    passion fuit

The last time I used passion fruit it was a very dark color and slightly wrinkled. You cut it open and scoop out the insides, there won't be much. The juice and seeds are edible and very tasty. :)

    tomato juice

I wish I had my Grandmothers recipe. I can still taste it and it's 30 years since she last made it before passing.
