    Stringy Green beans

Carol, Blue Lakes can be kinda funky even from planting to planting. Maybe pick the second crop just a bit smaller; this will usually work for most any type. Iplanted some Pickin and grinnin from Johnny's and they did great; till the third picking anyway. Stringy as could be. Istringed...

    Figs

Can them per your regular recipe but add a package of strawberry jell-o, sugar free if you desire. Hard to tell them from the real thing.

Went to pick a watermelon.....yeah right *pics*

Jared, Had the same issues with a Sugar Lump(Baker Creek heirloom). I read somewhere that those w/o tendrills would show a canker on the stem 1-2" from the melon and when it was ripe the vine would split at that spot. Well, dog if it did'nt! And the melon was great! Mine ripe...

step2' Right you are! Should have done my homework. I do remember thinking that there were too many other goodies out there to figure this one out! But the traveler looks manageable. Thanks for keeping me on the road!

    Giant Figs!!

Jomoncon, Thanks for shoutback. Figs, I'm finding out, have many different habits. Some years have found me banking on the second crop and, well, no second crop! Other years I could'nt give them away! But the girls love 'em. Lucky, I can't...

Hey folks! I'm jealous of lot's of you out there. Today I removed my first crop tomatoes, string beans, second crop squash, and watermelons; after they were all picked of course! Heirloom tomatoes now coming in along with okra and cukes. Prepping for fall planting with...

My new favorite tomato! So weird...

Hey Step, I've seen those awhile back and forgot about them. Got to get some for next year. Journey was right; Baker Creek has one that's called Reisentraub but I think it's bigger and does'nt pull apart.(I think)

    Giant Figs!!

Hey jomocon Ive never heard the blackjack name but I have 3 bushes about 8-9' tall and wide. These have been in our family since the early 1900's as starts passed down. People can't believe the size of these things. But you are right, they can be watery. Ouestion for you...

    Purslane

Beavis, The folks here give good council; leave it be if it's milky. It does make a nice sub for watercress in a cool summer salad. But it's VERY invasive and will root 10-12 inches deep if given the right conditions. You could sink a bottomless pail that deep and keep it at bay...

    Raised bed construction material

Hey Clue! Kinda late on the post here but look for a naturally rot resistant wood such as western cedar, eastern red cedar, or cypress. The latter grows mostly in tidewater areas like Virginia, N.C., and La. All of these last for years especially the red cedar which also has the...

    Planted fall potatoes today

Skeeter, Sorry if I sounded a little over bearing; I'm new to this posting stuff. So long as they sprout they"ll grow. Even so, hope you do well and keep us posted!

    Cherokee Purple - Normal size?

SS2, Thats's about as big as you want them as they do tend to crack especially with a sudden burst of water. They crack and the stink bugs come running. The Krims are very good and are more crack resistant. For a good treat,(don't shoot me for this) pop one in the fridge before...

Okra too big :( Now what

Hi Carol! Save those long pods! Just store them out of the rain till they dry throughly, then crush the pod, collect the seed, store them in a zip loc bag and on to the freezer. Next year just take them out soak them for an hour or two, then plant! I'll bet you'll...

    heirloom seed

I did'nt get to talk with Craig when we attended Rodger Wynn's heirloom Tasting in July here in S.C. He zipped in and out but he left several varieties and for all I know this was one of them. There was an Abraham lincoln there ,on the same table as amatter of fact. But the lincoln was smaller...

    Planted fall potatoes today

Let us know how they are doing from time to time. We here in S.C. can usually only plant for spring harvest. The old time rule of thumb that my father always used was to "plant only on the dark of the moon in Feburary" and we always had new potatoes in time for the first string bean harvest...

More wet weather woes, Brown Rot on my Peaches. :(

Have a good friend who's an extension agent with Clemson and he said that sometimes hail damage can show up weeks after the occurance and mimics brown rot. But it never hurts to spray early anyway! We have aproblem with peach borers down here and for the world the wound looks like rot. Don't...

    heirloom seed

Thanks for the info and knowledge shared. It's often you have to go with the info you get from the"suppliers". The brandywines I've grown have done well but this year has been tough on everybody with the heat. Picked up some good info on heirloom breeding last week. Seems that the breeder of the...

    heirloom seed

Has anyone grown an old heirloom called Abraham Brown? Tried one about two weeks ago that was grown in central N.C. and it was the richest tomato I've ever seen and tasted.

    Pineapple tomatoes

I agree with Journey-could be mispackaged or improperly fermented before prepping for packaging. I think that some of the red/yellows do better in milder areas. I tried a pineapple at an heirloom tasting last week and it was rather bland; but it was also grown in central S.C. in the HEAT.
