I always cut off the dead flowers and all the stalks too. Prune 'em right to the ground.

I igNORE my two once blooming/year hyrdrangeas. One is on the SE corner of the house, full sun. I put down several small clear plastic shower mats around it YEARS ago to suppress weeds. It is growing in a bed that is covered with river stone. it always blooms for me every year, whether I prune off the dead stalks or not. Mostly it blooms blue.
The other is on the west side of my garage, almost SW. It blooms blue and pink, and is in full sun.
Don't mulch, don't feed.
