I'd grow sunflowers, 'cause they're pretty, they are sooooo easy to grow, and they could provide food for the family and for the chickens, who then provide even more food for the humans. Oh, and they make great barter items at the farmer's market.
I told Alan that if we ever decide to plant the pastures for harvesting instead of using them for the cows, we'd grow sunflowers. I LOVE them. :)
We would only grow things that are "pretty". I'd love to have a you-pick flower field with zinnias, sunflowers, etc, but just not here in Texas.

Just one? I agree with Momofdrew. I could never decide on just one. :(
Maybe FLOWERS. A garden is not complete without flowers to feed the soul. :D

Were you thinking of this, Carol? (BTW, are you far from the Quad Cities? I was raised in Milan, IL)

"If, of thy mortal goods, thou art bereft,
And from thy slender store two loaves
alone to thee are left,
Sell one, and from the dole,
Buy Hyacinths to feed the soul"

- Muslihuddin Sadi,
13th Century Persian Poet

Aha, another poetry fan!

I don't envy you those humid Iowa summers, but oh, that fertile soil!

If I could only grow one thing in my garden........gheesh! that's a tough one! It would have to be corn. Corn on the cob, cream corn, corn meal for dipping just about everything in before it is fried, hushpuppies, cornbread and hot water cornbread, tortillas. Yup, it would be corn. Second chioce would be beans because they come in a million different varieties and are just about a complete food.

Wow.... I don't know if I could grow just one?! If it was my only option, maybe I wouldn't garden at all actually?! :/

Where's the wonder? What kind of passion would fields of nothing but corn be? I'd get bored with a one color basket.

I think that's crazy! My in-laws live like 30 minutes east of Davenport because when I visit we goto Davenport to shop and hit the restaurants.
