Just reported on Portland, Ore. Ch. 8 noon news ... Ch 2 reported that it's Last Saturday's all day Animal Rescue Telethon raised about $300,000 and resulted in 65 dog " adoptions " . Last year there were several hundred dogs shipped in by truck by these bleeding heart groups from S. Cal. and adopted out. ... Today, Ch 8 reported that many of the "adopters" not only had to pay adoption fees to the shelter, but when they came home to their rental home or apartment where they then had to pay a "Pet Deposit " between $200 --- $500 as well as a monthly rent of $20 --- $50 per month for each pet. This is due to the huge increase of "adopted" pets, mostly from these types or rescue adoptions, that are more often then not NOT house trained so urinating / deficating on carpets and floors, have separation anxieties resulting in chewing on doors, walls, etc., digging up grass / flowers / shrubs, etc, . So, to cover huge property loss repairs, the landlords have increased the pet deposits as well as monthly rent and just may increase them even further if they experience more costly damages. Just one example : My son knows one landlord that owns a house 3 doors from his home, where a month ago the landlord had to replace all of the urine soaked and very smelly carpeting, all chewed lower kitchen cabinet door corners, very badly scratched front door as well as the wall sheetrock nest to the door, a chewed bedroom door and a back yard lawn that looked like a bombing raid. Also, deep scratches on the house siding near the sliding glass door. All damage by their adopted Lab. type mongrel that they "adopted" a month before. Damage repairs of over $3,500. Told tenant they have to pay for the damages or he will take them to court ( court date pending ) , have 3 days to get rid of the dog or move out. They moved out shortly thereafter. :caf

They mean well, but people could at least take these untrained, uncontrolled, poor little things to their own homes. As in, the home they themselves own and let them chew up their own homes.

That said, there are a lot of good dogs that get caught up in the "unwanted dogs trash pile" and they don't deserve to be there. Even though I don't agree with a lot of their methods and their over priced mixed breeds, the rescues do some good.

I would still never contribute to the SPCA or any other rescue group.

My daughter adopted one of these dogs shipped from the South to Wisconsin.
Yes, they were house trained.
Yes, they were leash trained.
Yes, they had all their shots.
Yes, they were known to be good with children and other pets.
HA! This poor dog wasn't any of the above. In fact, he was frightened by the bowl of dog food and wouldn't eat anything until someone tried putting some food pieces on the floor where he gulped them up.
Trained eventually into a good family dog, but always needy and nervous. And the cost! Price for adoption. Price for shipping costs incurred by the adoption group. Required donation for food. Then the vet bills and needed shots.
