Strawberries!

Yesterday I gathered these from my "Strawberry Barrow"

These aren't quite ripe yet.

That is what I was wondering, do they taste good? I am thinking of buying Gurney Whopper strawberries.

The ones in your hand sure look big. I love the first crop. They are always the biggest and prettiest. That wheelbarrow looks like it's producing quite a bit for the amount of space.

I need some strawberry advice.
(1) Do they grow better in containers? I have read about growing them in those--I was thinking about a whiskey barrel and growing them at my DD's house.
(2) Do they like acidic soil?
(3) Do they hate to "get their feet wet?"
(4) Do you start from seed or buy the starts?

My supermarket always has gaint deep red strawberries, but they taste like cardboard

I have the same question about the containers, especially the ones that are barrels with holes all around the sides. No place for runners to start, but no weeds.

A few years ago was a old thread on strawberry jars. Almost everyone who tried them said was a nightmare keeping watered, sometimes required watering 2x a day

I have used that wheel barrow for years for strawberries. Just add some compost and steer manure now and then.
