It looks better than it is. Pure sand/gravel base with 20+ years of straw mulch and coating it with leaves in fall-plus years of chicken manure. Without straw, the water goes away and the roots burn in the hot sand.

Good news is that you can till it wet and not compact. Bad news is nematodes destroy root crops. Sand and nematodes are givens.
