Is there a good indicator for it being "overripe?" I can't seem to tell... once it's irrefutably red (Caroline) or golden yellow (Anne), I pluck it before I draw the birds. I can usually tell how ripe there were, by how easily they come off the plant, though... but it's obviously too late to...

I waited one day, before planting them, but the roots remained moist. They were in plastic bags, and the newspaper strips were still very much wet. I don't know what a "growing medium" is? Also, I'm pretty sure the "first leaves" aren't just a result of the canes being warmed during shipping...
