Rejuvanating Old Pear & Apple trees

I agree with Smart Red...I was taught the "rule of thirds". You don't cut more than a third of the canopy or the root system at a time. It will take a couple of years, but you will have a great orchard! Also, the apple limbs make great smoke for a smoker! Good luck!

    Butterbeans!

I must be doing something wrong. I live in central Oklahoma (zone 7) and have tried butterbeans for the past 2 years. The plants grow just beautifully, completely covering an 8-foot trellis, with plenty of blooms. We just never get any bean pods off of them. We just decided this week that we...

    Epsom salt

The Jerry Baker garden tips talk about using magnesium as an amendment when you have raised beds...I guess for all gardens also. I have raised beds and when I turn them over in early spring, adding compost, I add about 3/4 cup of Epsom salts for a 64 square foot bed. I mix in some 10-10-10...

Collard greens.. Any good recipes w/o ham?

I have used smoked turkey wings for flavoring. I also sweat onion and chopped garlic with a little red pepper flake, then add broth (either vegatable or chicken) before adding the greens.

    Pole vs. Bush Beans

Sorry to be late getting back to you Steve...I am going to try to grow the dark red kidney bean that you find in the dried bean aisle. I know those are really grown as shelled or dried beans and I want to give it a try. You say you've grown the pinto bean, so did you have any trouble with those?

    Pole vs. Bush Beans

I'm loving everyone's bean variety comparisons...however, does anyone try to grow kidney beans? DH and I love them and it has taken awhile for me to even find a company that sells the seeds. I will be putting those in this year and keep my fingers crossed that they produce.

    source for butter bean seeds?

I love the way everyone helps out on this web site! The "Big Mama" seeds we got were in the lima bean section...they are advertised as a really huge bean for fresh eating or leaving on the vine for dry beans. I was so looking forward to seeing what we got, but like I said, we'll try again next...

    source for butter bean seeds?

I tried Burpee's "Big Mama" pole bean this year, which grew like crazy. However, we had such record heat that I had lots of flowers, but no beans ever set. I'm going to try it again this next year, because we love butter beans too.

Folks in OK had about all they can take?

Despite what people think, it's really never boring in Oklahoma! After the 4.7 aftershock last evening (while watching the tornado coverage on TV), we just looked at each other and said "Good grief!"

    Carrot

Hi Kassaundra! I saw you were from Henryetta and wondered if you were in Oklahoma! We are actually in Choctaw, but OKC is so spread out that it's just easier to say that is where we are. Did your garden just sit there and not do much this year, with the heat breaking records constantly? We...

    Carrot

I'm new to theeasygarden, but had to laugh at your current carrot harvest. I planted beets this fall and only had one come up...my husband is always asking how "the beet" is doing. We are in your same growing zone, being in the Oklahoma City area.
