Yesterday was sunny and nice so I let the girls out to forage and cavort wherever they could find a scratchable spot. The shoveled paths are packed snow and the recent rain has made them extremely slick and slippery. I amused myself by watching out the kitchen window as they very gingerly made their way down the paths to turn off to the bare patches under the pines. I went back to my housework, and a bit later opened the back door to dump the coffee grounds in the compost bucket on the patio.

The sound of the door has a Pavlovian effect on my hens as it generally means the possibility of Yummy Treats.
A group of four that had found a promising spot to occupy themselves with in the dog run, were alerted and started towards me on the double.

The sound of wildly flapping wings made me look up, the first girl had hit the icy path and was frantically trying to keep her balance, "Whoa whoa whoa!!!" her face seemed to say as she slid forward. The propulsion she created with her wings slid her forward on the ice, as graceful as Kristi Yamaguchi. Well, nearly. The scene was repeated four times as each hen had their first ice skating lesson.

It was so perfectly funny that I laughed aloud. It would have been such a great a scene to record but it seems I'm never prepared at the right times.

My hens have always been more graceful at full-throttle on toenails . . .

So much more swan-like . . .

than their usual, head-down, bow-legged, wattle at double-time!

:gig I had a big Buff Orp that I called Big Mama. She was the biggest chicken I've ever seen and it was so funny when she'd come running for treats. :gig

Neat story....it sounds like they are getting ready for the "Chicken Olympics"......the only problem would be that no chicken would want to carry the Olympic Torch....(Fricasee)...not really welcomed....:/

Too funny, I was hoping for pictures or a video.... but those unexpected moments are too fun to watch and no time to get that camera in most cases! hahaha
