Using the greenhouse all summer long

Hahaha! I do not mind at all! Especially if you're talking about recreation spots. I don't like to say exactly where I live, since all the towns up here are so darn small, but let's just say I visit Glacier Park a lot.

The summers have been getting hotter and hotter around here, but I am going to go ahead and try to keep my plants in the greenhouse throughout the season. Can't know until I try!

Heather - do you have a blog I could follow? Would love to compare my weather and growing trends with yours. You too, Steve! Mine is at http://gardeningup.wordpress.com. Actually, is there a place within the forums where everyone lists their blogs? It would be great to find more NW zone 4/5 gardeners to follow.

You'll just have to find me here. The forums have much more interaction than I'm able to keep up with, at times!

We have a "My Page" on TEG. Mine is a bit out-of-date. I just realized the other day that using that page (or, Add New Page) as an index to forum posts would be very simple. Each 1 of our posts here have their own url address. Doing a "Word-Link" to that post would be all that it would take to keep it right at our finger tips for future reference.

Limiting yourself to your immediate surroundings may be limiting, Jess. (Yes, your best advice could come from just over the fence but you know what duds those guys across the street from you are as gardeners .) JoJo in BC has a blog! I think that her most recent posts indicate how she's trying to use up her cabbage & potatoes from last year . Always a sign of successful gardening - JoJo & LuLu (click).

No blog for me, likesteve i barely keep up with checking posts here, and usually only manage that once or twice a week. I get advance warning on incoming weather systems from Steve and thistlebloom, who are west of us. And yes the canadian gardeners here have some similar weather. But posters here from all over the country have given me some terrific advice!

Going to my local nursery today to pick up a few more asparagus plants (some of my seed starts from last year didnt make it thru the winter, need to fill in the bed) and get a cherry tomato plant. That better be ALL i come home with, wish me luck!

Yes Steve, I'm working on my last year's cabbage and potatoes. I also just started the last bag of carrots in the fridge from last year. This year's garden is later than usually because of the cool weather this spring. We are eating spinach already (volunteer that Lulu is sharing with us) and we had our first radish yesterday. I have been keeping up with my blog but find it hard to do that and participate on the forum as well. I often just do a quick read with no comments. FYI: upcoming blogs will include mulching, planting blueberries and Lulu playing Rambo in Hope. Good gardening everyone! :tools row

MT has such a short growing periods for peppers and tomatoes I can see having a decent garden without using a greenhouse. My son was out their for a couple of months and so I looked up their growing period... where he was they had about 27-40 days without frost.

It is possible to grow in a greenhouse all summer, however, a shade cloth is essential. I have been growing in my greenhouse for several years here in upstate New York. I took this photo Memorial Day and the sun was beating down and the temperature was in the 90s, but the shade cloth kept things reasonable, and the plants are thriving. It is not even June and I will be picking cucumbers tomorrow. Not many people in upstate New York will be doing that. I say: Go For It!

Jack - you're cukes are ready? What variety are you growing? I also like your dowel/string trellis setup. I was also thinking of doing something with string...

Since we're sharing, here's a photo of how things looked in my greenhouse after my Memorial Day potting adventure.



To further illustrate my point of this thread...my mother came by yesterday and after she admired all my plants, she asked, "So when will you set them outside?" AARRRG. I can see it's going to be an uphill battle explaining to people that I am trying to *get myself off the ground* and my plants will be in there all season. I think she also didn't understand that I really, really enjoy being in the confined space with the plants. I know you can't immediately see them in the yard when you come through the back door, and I think that's where it trips her up. She feels like I'm hiding them.

Oh well. All I know is that I almost couldn't get off the ground after planting some spare african daisy seedlings in the flower bed yesterday, so even if I have to battle intense heat in the greenhouse, I think it will be worth it to save my hips and knees (the main joints that give me trouble).

I am growing Little Leaf cucumbers, as they can be used for pickling and salads. The tomatoes are Trust and Tropic and the eggplant is Turkish/Italian Orange. I also have an assortment of flowers and some garlic in the greenhouse.

Nice green house there. It gives great results and would be long lasting for you. Such a kind of setup requires great care as they are placed out door so nee to be taken care of regularly. Keep going on and keep sharing such a nice information.

I would think you are going to have to water daily in the heat of the summer to keep things alive. Tomatoes, eggplant and peppers will thrive in the extreme heat.
