Peas....English, snap, southern (cow pea)? Ok, so when you're posting about peas, please tell us what kind of pea you're talking about!

Now my question. Anybody know what is recommended spacing for bush crowder peas? Arkansas, and yes I know its late! :D Flood got my first garden.

Well for the most part most peas can be grown in the same conditions. I recommend planting them about 8-10 inches apart. This will help shade out weeds and give you more plants per area.

Too bad about your first garden. I might be tempted to recommend a fall planting since they don't too well in heat, as I remember summers in Little Rock :p

I agree completely on the pea ID issue.

As for black eyed peas, I'm not sure Oakland was aware of which you meant, but they should be fine, as they are a summer crop. They can take interplanting.

I don't know about a bush variety, but the highest yields from the regular varieties come from a 24" spacing. You could plant them closer, though, and like Oakland, I would.

Back to the pea ID problem. All my life green peas, whether snow peas, or sugar snaps, have been called, peas. If they are snow peas, we specify.

Black eyed peas are called, black eyed peas, never just peas.

I become very confused as to what is meant when the word 'pea' is used to mean beans, as well. I think it'd be great if everyone specified, so we can save time asking! :)

Yeah, I didn't make that distinction.

Sometimes I get ahead of myself and don't type everything I think about. Black eyed peas can be grown in the summer. And actually can be killed by light frost.

Thanks Tutter!

I don't know about the pea thing but does anyone besides me find shelling peas so relaxing? I love sitting and shelling five gallon buckets of peas we don't have any this year and I am going to miss it.

I thought I was the only one who felt that way, Penny! I get into some kind of "Zen-mode" doing peas, snapping/stringing beans, etc. I find it very relaxing. :)

Not a problem, Oakland. :happy_flower

so when my 4 rows of pink eye crowder peas come off, y'all come on over and help with the shelling!

I was raised in the north and didn't know about anything but english peas or green peas. In the south if you say peas, they assume your talking black eye or crowder or some type of field pea unless you say english pea.

I was discussing the other night with my husband, born and raised in the south, that anybody here can tell you which is a pea (like black eye) and which is a bean(like pinto) but can't tell you what the difference is. I sure can't.
