Chillin' In The Garden
I found this wonderful site through BYC.
My husband and I moved out to 7 acres a year ago. Last year with the move I was not able to put in a garden. This year I started a raised bed but so far it has done less than expected in fact it has prodcued more cost than produce. I have added some organic fertilizer and hoping for a fall crop. I did plant late peas and so far they have come up green and healthy looking. But the beans started out that way then fizzled.
I have never planted but a few things before like beans, tomatoes, cucumbers and squash. I would like to start producing all our own veggies and herbs. In the fall a friend has offered to breakup an acre of pasture so I can have a real garden next year. I know it is going to be a challenge because my husband says the soil is tallow. But there are lots of corn, cotton and soy fields around so I know it can be done.
My dad always had a big garden and I helped him as a child but it has been 35 years or more so I don't remember a lot of what he taught me.
I am sure I will be asking lots of stupid questions so please excuse me.
thanks
Susan
