What did YOU do in your garden today :P

My son stopped by today and helped me remove the tree that fell on my rock garden. YAY! I pulled some of the leaves off, but HAD to get the porch/greenhouse cleaned out so the kitchen garden has a place to go soon. Up-potted 60 peppers and finished up 11 flats of impatien seedlings. At least I'm catching up with that.

@thistlebloom - yeah, when a guy that never ever is sick or even complains calls and mentions calling an ambulance ... because the pain has been severe for 6 hours! I'm usually a pretty calm person but ... ... mom was sure it wasn't heart symptoms, but jeeeez!

@digitS' - My dad never sits down. He's not real particular about the yard, but they have a LOT of leaves to clean up, a couple of perennial beds, herb garden. Mom can't help much... but I think we finally got Dad to call if it involves a ladder! When I returned with his Rx, just home from the hospital, he was cooking Mom lunch.

@ninnymary - That's a great idea! So far I called a teen boy who used to be in my daycare. He said he could round up some friends, and they like pizza! I think I have convinced Dad to wait until next week, and to test out his LazyBoy for a bit.

Sorry for rambling off topic... next time I promise, it will be about mud!

I just transplanted more peas to the garden, and up potted cucumbers, pumpkin, and corn. Tomorrow will be the cantaloupes turn. Also the watermelon finally decided to sprout, and those tomatoes are set to make a liar out of me. I was sure the pear 19 wouldn't sprout, I even dug up the seeds two days ago, and the seed wasn't even swelled. I went over yesterday, and nada, so today I planted 5 more, and went to the neighbors to put it with the rest, and those tomatoes didn't just sprout they grew a full INCH! I guess I'll just have to offload the extras on neighbors and friends.

Yesterday, I made it to the big veggie garden for the first time this year! I talked with a couple of neighbors, found out that the tractor guy is scheduled to show up, admitted that he was needed in the new extension and swallowed hard and allowed that it would help if he went over part of the other garden (there go some of my permanent paths ), and took a picture . . .



I saw the first dandelion blooms of the season on the way out there. Aaand once I got there found that spring had come to the big veggie garden!

With the prospect of the tractor guy messing things up and wind gusts well above 20mph, I decided that it was something of an ill-advised trip so DW & I went off to eat our lunch on the river then headed home. On the way, there were some campanula from a friend's yard to stop for . . .

At home, I got a lot of Early Girl tomatoes out of their community container and into 4-packs. Today, I did more of that sort of thing but will share on the "Starts" thread .

@Wishin' and @digitS' inspired me to start some sunflowers early, 3 varieties, something I've never considered doing, but it sure makes sense!
I also planted a flat of 3 types of kale, started a box with 2 more varieties of tomato ( San Marzano and Red Calabash ) which were impulse buys when I was at the hardware store for something non garden related.
That irresistible tractor beam pulled me over to the seed rack!

I up potted about 40 basils (Lime and Sweet). Could have been way more than 100, but I don't know what I would do with all that... I just didn't expect such vigorous germination!

Up potted the 2 lupines that sprouted from a 2005 packet of seed, and the one delphinium from a packet of the same vintage.
And up potted the Blood Flower asclepias. Now I'm out of soil and seriously short on table space and window sills.

I do all my seed starting in the kitchen...dh wanders in and looks around..."any ideas for dinner?... Uh,... that don't involve dirt?"

I don't know about dinner, but I bet I could whip up a mud pie for dessert!

I was worthless today. Nasty head/sinus bug. Very windy outside and I am all miserable. It was sunny and 70. It killed me to stay in. So I did a bit of cleanup in the backyard flower beds. (And once again picked up after DH's dog.) Now my ears are stuffy and my voice is almost gone. Did not wear gloves and have scratches from some of the pricklier debris. DH had a more productive day. He shoveled the new compost onto some beds. Planted a row or 2 of peas and put in potatoes. He is hoping to get the raspberries in the ground that where dug out of a friends yard.

I've had a few sneezing fits, Carol Dee! I don't like the idea of already being hit by "seasonal" allergies! Maybe it just has to do with a lingering recovery from a cold.

@thistlebloom -- What kinds of kale??

Premier, Lacinato, and Red Russian, Steve. I would have to get off the couch to find the name of what I planted last year, which I was happy with. I ordered these from Victory Seeds...I just happened to be on their site looking around.
I've noticed a disturbing trend in my seed selecting, it seems to be based a lot more on impulse than planning.

Oh yeah, and that's a big yikes!! on the dandelion in bloom already Steve!

It is "already" isn't it? I have a lot of them growing but haven't seen a bloom yet.

I don't know why but I have always loved seeing the first dandelion of spring.

Today, I hoed a 50ft row of onions! Yeah, for once we got them in early, they are growing and greening up early!!
