Daffodils

I have never lived anywhere with daffodils before now and I am loving all the beautiful and different types that have come up here this year. I've counted about 15 different varieties so far and I have one very large clump that is just about to bloom so I'm not sure if it is yet another kind or not. I know some of them should probably be divided but I've never done that before and I am worried about doing it correctly and at the right time. Anyone have tips for me on that? Here are some of the daffodils I have found around the house this spring:








This is my favorite and I know it needs to be divided because the clump of green growth is pretty large but there were only a few blooms.

The ones you are holding in your hands may be Cheerfulness. Are they especially fragrant?

I really don't know Steve. That one isn't blooming right now and I didn't give it a sniff when I was looking at it.

To divide, wait until the blooming is over and the leaves have started turning yellow/brown. Then dig the bulbs up. I usually store the bulbs in a cool dark spot until closer to fall planting time so they don't try regrowing too quickly.

Don't be surprised if you have plenty of plants coming back from groups you think you have dug and moved. I have one section where I have tried removing the bulbs for 5 years and still have a thick stand of jonquils that I keep missing come up each year.

I found dwarf daffodils on clearance at WalMart. I picked up 5 of them and put them next to my front walkway. I heard about the dwarfs recently on "Garden Smart", and they ARE tiny. Here is a little bit more about them, after a sloppy I'Net search.

I also heard that daffidils will correct themselves and pull deeper if you plant them too shallow.
I don't know about you, but I like to put bulbs in places that need to be filled in, so I have no desire to divide or move them later.

All the same or pot luck? I hope to dig up my daffy bed this year. I recognize many of the daffodils shown in the pictures from potter watch, but know if they come up they will be pretty much mix and match.
