I planted mustard, turnips, beets and collards about three weeks ago. Leaves develop but then the stems get real long and thin and they fall over. What am I doing wrong?

Interesting. I've never hilled beets and their leaves usually stand up or bend over a bit if they get old after forming a head. Are they getting enough light and spaced wide enough apart?

silkie I should have specified to hill the collards, as it doesn't matter if you hill root crops or not.

HaHaHa silkie they are a southern thing. Get you a can of Old Glory brand when you go to the grocery store and try them cooked with some fatback or bacon and a few flakes of crushed red pepper and a little sugar. Simmer them on a low burner till the meat is done. Eat with cornbread and pork. Enjoy!

I have thined them but they might not be getting enough light. This was kind of a trial garden next year I am moving it out to the pasture where it will get lots of light.
