This fall there were a few posts of raised beds and what to fill them with. I was wondering how did it go? Are you guys any closer to great soil?

As for me I built a total of three beds. I dug up like 18 inches of soil (mostly sand) and replaced it with hay, yard clippings, newspaper, shredded carboard and organic matter from the kitchen. I also spread some chicken poop from a friend. they soil overall looks great. Nice and black. I don't think everything has completely decomposed or composted. As I can vaguely see they straws of hay. Can I still plant in the spring?

I also bought some bunnies (six of them). I was in desperate need of poop.

 Bunny Poop!!! HAHAHAHAHA

I have my raised beds built... my fencing laid out... then my husband ran out of steam. He was supposed to go buy me some soil from the landscaping place so we could fill them... I also was digging up some area to put in corn stalks. Still haven't bothered until he gets the dirt.

I have a large pot I've been composting since August. When we get the Loem soil in the raised beds I'm going to dump the pot in them and turn the soil a couple of times until spring.

I think yours will be just fine for Spring. You still have several months to go. If everything has broken down this well so far, it sounds good. Don't over poop the soil... you don't want too much close to planting time... it can burn the roots.

I had my husband build me a couple of new beds in summer. I layered chafs of straw on the botom because they are very deep. Then I brought in a truck load of free mostly composted horse manure. One bed I added a couple of cubes of soil from the garden store. But the horse poop beds are doing great all on their own. My neighbor put the horse poop in his green house and has a ton of stuff allready growing.

Can I ask how deep yours are? Ours are 12" give or take an inch. We put hay under some chicken wire we laid at the bottom to keep gophers out. We're putting up a black metal fence around it after we bury more chicken wire on the outside to keep animals from digging in.

If your soil is to fertile, to much nitogen from all the poop, the plant will grow fast and tall but not produce much of a fruit. It all went into producing the green plant.

Ok going to watch the poop.... I just can't help myself. Last year my soil was dead that nothing grew. It was basically sand with no organic matter.
