The kids were the ones that actually noticed them and I thought it would make a good project for them.

Some how I missed this post, Mary. I would definitely start the seeds indoors at least by mid winter. That is how I got started! They will not produce the same exact specimen but, will be progeny of the original cross. You will likely have all very similar plants. The seedlings will look like a piece of grass all winter long. With space, mulch, and good soil and sun you can get a bloom in 1-3 years. You need to watch out for fungus gnat infestation that will eat the roots and kill the seedlings. If you do not want to use your winter space, I would sprout the seeds in the spring-even in paper towel- and then plant outdoors. You will have to be careful of them not drying out. This will add an extra year to bloom. I chill my seeds in the fridge for 4 weeks to simulate winter chill.

I was just looking at photos of some of my pals. Have a sore back today and had to remind myself of things to come. This is an unnamed seedling not yet ready for splitting. Maybe this year. Hope you enjoy.

I just bought a purple daylily for my DD's yard, called, "Bela Lugosi." It has a yellow center. Anybody grow this? ...and, does it revert back to the natural tiger lily color?

New daylily forms are created from seed by cross pollinating selected cultivars. The seed contains it's own genetic material. Every plant derived from the seed will be a clone when the fans are split. It will never revert. The flower can change slightly in the location and soil quality in which it is grown, but it would be slight.
The lilies that revert are the Asiatic lilies. The bulb looks kind of like a pineapple. What the bulb matures it will split. For me they always then turn back to the orange. I no longer grow them.

I have been very lax in showing you some new daylily discoveries that I have made in my garden of young plants. I have a couple doubles that I think show promise. This plant has 3 layers of petals all pancaked together. Very cool in person. I sold 3 plants to 3 other hybridizers this week.. I see that as an accomplishment.

Here is another double. The form is referred to as hose in hose. It is a huge bloom with many layers of petals. The color is a near white, kind of a buttery white. No names yet. They are small plants not ready for sale. I found a lot of new beauties this summer.

what a beautiful pale yellow bloom. it's been nice walking around my yard the past couple weeks with all daylilies in bloom. i didn't realize how many i have that are in different shades or red & the different heights. i was disappointed with my iris this year since they just didn't want to bloom but the lilies are giving me a better show even with the lack of rain.
