Hi @aftermidnight, I didn't ask the guy at the counter for expidited mail, but I bet he entered it on his computer without me knowing and charged me for it. Possibly too that is the only way a package can go to Canada from here. I checked my receipt and the amount of charge is about normal for your package. Anyway very glad you got it. I think the Selugia is the one the will look like you want it to pretty much when you get your new seed next year.

The Big Bean Show - Day #25

Another cranberry type bean. This one is called "Brockton Horticultural". I thought it was going to be a pole climbing bean but it was more of a semi runner that would climb only slightly. However I did have these plants growing in partial shade so perhaps that affected it's growth. It did produce beautiful and large seeds. The bean was discovered being grown by a gardener near Brockton Massachusetts and introduced by the Aaron Low Seed Company in 1885.

What is the definition of a Cranberry type bean? Is it color, pattern, shape, or some combination or something else? The one I called "Valley View" that I grew this year out of the 39's looks something like that.

Hi @Ridgerunner, The horticultural and or cranberry beans are the ones that have the color and patterning of the Brockton and just like the Valley View you found this year.

So, I guess although much smaller than the above this freshly shelled Emilia's Italian, darker markings when dried is a cranberry bean also.

@aftermidnight, Yes your Emilia's Italian is a cranberry bean too. I think you mentioned that it makes a good snap bean.

The Big Bean Show - Day #26

This bean is called "Brown Kidney". It was one of the beans the was part of the John Withee's Wanigan bean collection. It has round green pods and seems more like a snap bean not a dry bean. For anyone who has ever grown the bean known as "Pawnee" "Brown Kidney is the variety I discovered "Pawnee" from in 1979. This is the seed mother.

The Big Bean Show - Day #27

This bean is called Cannellino Nero. It grew very well here in our hot and somewhat dry 2016 summer. It comes from Europe. I would guess by the name that it originates in Italy. It's a bush variety and grows without runners. A productive dry bean with beautiful seed.

The Big Bean Show - Day #28

This is "Cannellino Roso" The red seeded companion to C. Nero. I would imagine that the origin is probably the same. The bean is about the same in maturity time and productivity. I enjoyed growing both these beautiful beans in this 2016 summer.
