I went with a friend to a quilt show this weekend and was BLOWN AWAY by what people were able to create in fabric.
Here is a TINY sampling of the art.

There were lots of traditional quilts

This one was called Pigs In A Blanket

I just had to get closeups of some of them....

The scarf appeared to be a real scarf - the woman was 'painted' with millions of tiny stitches

Wow. Those are amazing! I especially like the flame one and the flower closeup. They showed the veination in the petals which always strikes me as so beautiful in real flowers.

Those are all such works of art, I can't even imagine the hours that went into them. Not to mention the talent and creativity.
Thanks for sharing those pics!

I dabbled in quilting once upon a time, and when I say 'dabble' I mean I never even finished a pillow top. It's not for the ADD afflicted that's for sure!

Some of both.
We were making pests of ourselves getting RIGHT up on the quilts - without touching them - to try and see if the stiches varied any or were all uniform. Slight variance = hand sewn.
My friend tried out a few of the 'free arm' machines. I had never seen a sewing machine with handlebars!! The sales man was not amused when I asked if they came with training wheels too....

I have dabbled with some quilts and want to find the time to do some more. MEANWHILE, I keep watching quilting programs and have learned a LOT. Here are a few links about photo quilts:

What I have REALLY learned is how these modern quilters use glue, regular & fabric glue AND iron on interfacing (which is glue) AND iron on stabilizer (which is glue) on practically everything to keep it from shifting.
I met a woman who had a couple of computerized long arm quilting machines and a quilt stretcher AND a craft room to house them all.
What most of them have in common is that they do a little bit at a time, and plan for and use boxed storage of the pieces prior to assembly.
I like this mother/daughter team the best:

I'm always amazed and what people can create. When I look at pinterest, I always wonder how people could have even thought of it.

These were just a few. We were half way through the show before I remembered to take pictures! I wish I knew more about how they were judged. There were so many that were stunning but got no award.
