That is what is drawing them in
He has been doing it for 30 years. I don't think that's it. I think they may have lost their food source a few houses in back of us when they fumigated. If nothing else, they might have cleaned up their area so their housing could been disturbed.

I had a huge influx in mice when the house across the road got cleaned up for selling.
The owners just walked away from it and left everything, including trash and a lot of animal feed.
When all that was hauled off they targeted my place. :sick

In the South Bay area of the SF Bay, crows have eaten/driven away all birds. There is nothing left there, but noisy crows/ravens. Oh wait, a few red winged black birds too but they are mostly in San Jose area.

Maybe some citronella essential oil painted on the trunks? Most animals HATE that smell like crazy and I've read it works on rats and mice as well.

We found a rat and it's nest underneath some bricks where I had stored bags of leaves. Unfortunately the rat escaped. But since we displaced it, there is no more chewing on the branches of my fig tree. All other veggies have been left alone. But something has eaten the few figs that it produced. My hope is that the tree will continue to grow and that next year it's bark will be tougher and not as appetizing for those rats.

Thankful that I will still be able to grow veggies this year.
