the most relevant thing i can think of is that persistence will get you a long ways. some season's don't go well, but if you observe what is going on and learn from it then things will improve. over time. yet at the same time, not every planting succeeds, so some acceptance and patience are good things too.

i learned quite a bit about plant propagation techniques from keeping house plants but we also had gardens outside and as soon as i was able Mom was quite willing to let me take care of them.

it wasn't until i got older that i found out a lot more about ecology, diversity, micro-climates microbiology and soil sciences. winter is a good time for reading up on things and daydreaming about the next season...

Welcome from the Tyler, Texas area. My husband was born in Killen Alabama and raised in Florence, Alabama. He didn't see running water or electricity until he was 10 years old. LOL He'll be 73 next week, so that's been awhile.

Welcome Haley! Glad you joined. Is it too early to get your beds ready? Do you compost your chicken's poop? If not, you may want to start a composting bin or area. I would start getting those beds ready if you can. You will have plenty of planting once spring is here.

I'm glad you're starting small. That is so important so you don't get overwhelmed. Learn to see what does well for you this year and then you can plan for next year. Plant what you enjoy eating. Soil is key. You want nice rich soil. If you don't have that you're going to start amending with organic matter such as compost, leaves, straw, etc.
