Will spring ever come?

The children had come back in we are under a frost warning tonight.... grrrrrrr
Dang mator plants are between 12” and 15” now. Peppers have flowers .. the weather is going to improve this weekend..... fingers crossed

Wow @Zeedman that was scary. Glad everyone was ok. How old is your daughter? She not only saved her life but also the children.

Well, the winter storm last weekend turned out to be the snow of the century here - shattered the record for April, and was the 2nd biggest snow storm total in our history (#1 was in the 1800's). Daughter was babysitting for someone at their home, water heater vent was blocked by snow & she had CO poisoning! Fortunately, her & the kids are all OK. Spent 9 hours over 2 days digging us & the daughter out. The final straw came today... my patio roof collapsed from the weight of the snow. It's going to be a bear to clean up, the debris is still covered by about 15" of wet snow. Looks like I will have some demolition & reconstruction to do this summer.

OMG, I'm going to stop whining about our weather right now, glad everyone is O,K. On a brighter note it looks like we might get a bit of sun and warmth next week but I'm not holding my breath. We seem to be losing both our springs and falls the last few years, it would be so nice to have the 4 seasons back.

spring bulbs my friends shop today

Love grape hyacinths, some of my patches are 20+ years old, and look more like lawns than flower beds. In a normal year, the honey bees would first appear on those blossoms. They had just begun blooming before the snow hit, so hopefully there will be minimal damage to the buds when the snow cover melts. Not sure if the bees will show though; I expect everything will be set back 1-2 weeks behind normal this year.

Funny thing... I had been procrastinating about starting my nightshade transplants, and just didn't feel the urgency I should feel at this time of the year. I mentioned that to DW, and she said - quite matter of factly - "maybe that means something is going to happen". Turns out she was right.

Thanks to all for the well wishes, they are deeply appreciated. I'm just glad that no one I love was injured... and happy to hear that those I know in surrounding states made it through unscathed.

Hey ya, @Zeedman! I have the grape hyacinths to go with the daffodils and lawn violets. And today, the first dandelion in my yard bloomed.

It was a sunny day, twice! With 3 days of NO rain, the fence posts were dry. Finally, pulled the old rails off, scraped, wire brushed, and painted the posts so that I could put a fence panel in place that I finished in the carport eons ago!!

Well, we have a 40% chance of rain tonight. Wind gusts tomorrow to above 30mph and about 10° cooler -- so, we are right back to where we were. Maybe I can get some concrete work done in those conditions but there are plenty of plants I need to move around in the greenhouse. More bags of potting soil in the carport and pots ordered before I run out ... like the day after tomorrow .

I'm okay, really! I can "checkerboard" the 4-packs so that they won't be so crowded ... yeah ... Shucks. Why can't the weather be perfect ... when the plants and all of us need it to be?

With the rain and clouds tonight, maybe I won't have to be out firing up the heater in the hoop house at 1am, like I did this morning ... or, was that last night? Ugh, betting on the olde greenhouse furnace not crapping out and making extra work. Unless the season turns really bad, I won't have to set up the shed-attached hoop house but, there's that shelter - if need be. Pretty good light in there, under reasonable skies.

I have a large patch of grape hyacinths in my lawn too. They where there when I moved in over 35 years ago. I have start my new patches from the original. Also have clumps of daffodils just as old but they are poor flowering for some reason. yes I have divided and planted in other light conditions nothing works. A clump might produce 2 flowers no matter how old

To me, dandelions are the true sign that Spring has arrived... and that it's time to start planting. And do I ever have lawn violets!!! The grass positively turns purple in some parts, I really look forward to seeing them. A neighbor down the street stops by every year to pick the blossoms, she makes "violet syrup" out of them. When the violets bloom heavily (as they did last year) she gives me a little jar of the syrup... it has an interestingly flavor, almost spicy.

Between the violet harvest & allowing the dandelions to grow to feed my resident ground bees, I am usually the last in my neighborhood the cut my lawn - much to the consternation of my neighbors.
