More melon than I can shake a stick at!



After I finished my breakfast cereal, I went back for an extra serving of fruit. Goddess melon on top, Diplomat galia melon below - more melons are on the deck. No doubt there will be more ripe when I am in the garden this afternoon. They are ripening in the melon patch on almost a 24 hour schedule!

I am so jealous! Melon is one of my favorite fruits. Which do you prefer and why? Next year I am going to squeeze a plant somewhere!

Not really the galia - although it is wonderful to have it early and consistently, year after year. It's nearly identical to a honeydew melon and tasty sweet!

Wouldn't be able to grow a honeydew. Couldn't grow a Crenshaw, no matter how much I wish that I could.

I'm still waiting for 73 day Halona but 68 day Goddess is coming on strong. (Diplomat, 71 days)

Might try some more Asian melons in 2019. They aren't really like a cucumber but sorta trend that way. Mary, maybe they would be okay for your Bay Area weather.

Steve, I want a melon that is sweet, flavorful, and likes our cool 67° summer weather. Is there any you'd recomment?

Not enough experience, Mary.

I grew 2 Asian melons. They looked quite a bit different in the catalog but neither had what I thought of as a sweet, melon flavor. They were early, tho!

Sweet Granite cantaloupe worked for my garden. I think it was the name that encouraged me to keep looking (& the risk of breaking a tooth ).

Honey Girl charentais was a big find for me, although it failed in one out of the 4 seasons that I grew it ... before it was taken off the market. I have tried 2 other charentais varieties since over 3 seasons and been disappointed every time.

Watermelon has been about as close to a big zero as possible.

After a sleep over, and a plate full of pancakes I sent the boys out to check the pumpkin patch. I expected them to find 3-4 nice sized pumpkins. I guess I hadn't check it for a while.

Those are nice and big. Did they pick 2 a little too early? Do green pumpkins continue to ripen once harvested.

They all asked about Pumpkin Pie for Christmas. I must say my pie is legendary.
