My little homestead in progress

We've got 10 acres or so in SE New Mexico(I believe zone 7-8 ish) and a ton of Russian Elms that we have been slowly thinning out. Slowly but surely we are getting things in order in the yard. We have high alkaline soil that gets compact and unruly pretty quick. With good compost and fertilizers mixed in, a few place are coming along nicely. Chickens, pigs and goats have helped with the compost piles! I found this through BackYard Chickens and am so excited to learn new things to help my little slice of heaven. Thank you!!!

It's a big state but there he was in southeast New Mexico ... an awfully long time ago! I will see Dad, tomorrow. I'm not so sure that he will have an idea for pairing juniper with other plants but maybe he and I can talk about that. I know he is somewhat familiar with the juniper forests of eastern Oregon because we just had to drive over the "hill" to reach those, from where I grew up in Oregon .

It sounds like you are a new resident on your homestead but are you new to the great state of New Mexico? Besides Prince of Wales juniper (and fewer elms ), what are you planning to grow? Dad's family had alfalfa and peppers but ... that's just what I know about .
