Ok, you all have convinced me to try again. I’ll assume it was a variety thing that made it taste and feel like cardboard..... so what variety will be tender and have a green taste-we like spinach, turnip greens, Swiss chard, all lettuces, cabbage, etc.

Come up with a consensus and I’ll try it....can always feed it to wife’s rooster-maybe that will finish him off....won’t you all feel bad that kale killed him?

Oh, stop it @thistlebloom !!

I like cabbage well enuf. Spinach is good although, for some reason, I like it better raw in a salad than cooked. I "discovered" chard in recent years by not growing a variety with a heavy stem. Turnip roots aren't really to my liking (kohlrabi is better ;)). I didn't believe that I had ever tried the turnip greens so I grew them just a couple of years ago. Mustard greens! That's okay but I have mustard greens every year.

Do you suppose that a different brassica like bok choy would be more to your liking, Seed'? Don't think of kale as a salad green ... and, I don't care for green smoothies ...

I seem to be on a mission to get people to try making Portuguese kale soup! Sure, Scotch kale is just fine with some spicy Italian sausage and white beans but why not Portuguese kale? (One of these days I might actually find Portuguese sausage in the soopermarket but I'm happy with the Italian ;).)

I like bok choy, I think it's great raw in a salad. And you have me interested in Portugese kale Steve. Because it's so purdy! Haha.

I don't do much cooked greens, other than in stir fries, and occasionally in soup.

I can tell you for sure that turnip greens are not going to happen around here again. :sick

My chickens love kale, hate spinach.

@thistlebloom ~ Try cooking it with chicken broth and smoked turkey wings/legs. That's the only way I'll eat cooked greens. I also like to mix my turnips with kale.

I've grown red russian kale. Never ate any, just fed to my chickens. The curly kale I grew last year (still have one growing strong in my garden) I used for kale chips & mixed with my turnips. The chips tasted good, just smelled like a dead rat while drying.

I have lacinato kale (dinosaur kale) growing now in my milk jugs. It's a large, smoother leaf than the curly kale.

Do you have a raging fever that is kicking your brain off kilter? I am worried about you! haha, I'm growing kale this year, never tried any, so I guess we will both experiment on ourselves. I am growing the lacinato kale. It is supposed to get big, I hope so. Can't grow grass worth a durn on this beach sand, maybe I can give the sheep kale treats.....if they don't spit them back at me.

I love greens! I love turnip greens and mustard greens and collard greens, they are good with cornbread loaded with lots of butter!
