DW and I were once working in the garden bed very close to the property owner's house.

Two story house, they had turned over their entire backyard and more than half of the nearby lot for our garden. But, we were setting out plants in the most difficult to see location from the road, in front of the home.

A police helicopter, I believe it was, showed up and circled, then hovered right where they could see us working. Peeking around the corner of the roof ... Eavesdropping, as it was ;).
Literally Eavesdropping...

They probably figured that no sane person would dig up that much yard, unless they were growing a cash crop. Maybe they were just looking for some fresh salad? Did you by any chance have any plants disappear mysteriously in the middle of the night that year?

We had been there for several years by then, @Zeedman .

And, continued ...

I cannot imagine that they would think that it was a very useful spying tool. A helicopter makes so much noise!! Still, having it hovering in one place, slightly hidden but not really ...

Another possibility is there was a surveillance of something else going on. It would almost have to be in about a 2 block area, tho.

I have a lighting setup both in the basement and on top of the fridge. When in use, they each glow and it looks from the outside, at night, like I might be growing something that I shouldn't. Right now...Brussels Sprouts, on top of the fridge. Don't plan to smoke them at harvest.
